Preview keeps jumping ahead and stopping

Hi,

First time posting...

I've not been using PowerDirector 13 for long, but I have just started experiencing a weird problem. I couldn't find any reference to it, but I'm not sure I was using the right search terminology!

Steps:

Copy in a video and some audio files

Drag them to separate tracks

Hit Play on the preview

Video preview will play for a few seconds, then the video jumps ahead and freezes. The audio continues to play normally

When audio catches up to where the video froze, the playback continues in sync. After a few more seconds, the video jumps forward again

The final movie output is seamless so it's only a problem during Preview. It's driving me nuts as I can't edit effectively.

This has happened on a couple of different videos. They have all been captured from the same source (software called PlayClaw). I have been using the same version for a long time and not had this problem until recently.

From doing a bit of experimenting I have found that file size of the video may be the one common thing. A file under 60GB has no problems. A file over 100GB causes the jumping. Does PD13 have some sort of problem with large files?

Obviously I could cut down the files, but I'd rather not add extra steps to my workflow.

Any help appreciated

EDIT:
To add a bit more info:

I have tried previewing at different quality levels, and also with Shadow file off or on. No improvement

If I preview in Non-Realtime then the video plays through as expected - but this isn't any good for me as I need audio

On most videos it will play for about 9seconds, then jump to the 22-24 second mark. If I hit Pause then Play it will play for about 6 seconds to the 30secon mark then jump to 1min 02. This happens consistently.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit

Wow, 100gbs that's some file. If you want the forum members to help you, you will need to post a copy of your computers DxDiag file.

Also, please post a screenshot of the video properties (highlight a clip, right click, properties) Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

Attached is DXDiag file.

File properties:

File type: AVI
Type: M-JPEG
Duration: 00:33:51:42
Resolution: 2560x1440
Frame Rate: 59.94fps
Aspect ratio: 16:9
Frame type: Progressive

Also, after more messing around I have found the file size doesn't seem to be the issue after all - it seems a file either has the problem or not. I'm going to try some different capture software to see if there's any difference. It seems strange that I only noticed this a few days ago, but I haven't installed or changed anything on my PC.

Hi

Firstly, go here and check that you have the very latest intel driver (29th May, I believe) http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

You haven't reported the bitrate from the properties window, but I suspect it is very high given the resolution of your clips. I read that you are using shadow files, but are you ensuring that EVERY clip has a green flag before you start editing, failure to do so can cause many problems. You may want to look here for an alternative, quicker option for shadow files http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/43102.page

I've had a very similar issue (video freeze and pick up again later while audio keeps going). In my case though, I was using video speed up (power tools) on the clips. I've also had issues when using the stabilizer. Lowering preview resolution often helped but not always and that's where it's strange; anything higher than 'normal' would hick up, with and without shadow files. File size was certainly not the issue (2 clips for testing: 163MB and 104MB). Ticket into CL.

Hi CV27

Hours of testing and this was also in my Case !!!

NO 1. UPDATE iNTEL ( AS RECOMMENDED )
No 2.Switch of Shadow Files
On your Computer " Speed " is the most Import-end Factor ( 32 Ram )
Only SPEED can solve the Most Problems

Read my Editing Computer Setting 1 Months NO Problem

Thanks to all for the info / advice.

Have checked my Intel drivers - nothing to update apparently

Switching off Shadow Files and reducing the res of the preview allowed the video preview to play for longer before freeze / jumping. But I probably need to do more testing for it to be conclusive.

So tomorrow I'll have a go at the trick suggested in the threads posted by The Shadowman. See if I can fool the system into behaving with lower res files before switching in the real ones.

Paul1945,

As I've written in other posts, when these situations occur, there are ample resources left (mem, IO, CPU), so no system level bottleneck in my opiniion. I suspect an issue with PD internal architecture (badly managed waits or badly synchonized multi-threading ?).

And there is no way those 2 small clips I was testing with were all that demanding. I7-4770, 3.40Ghz, 16GB RAM, Asus Z87-Plus Z87chipset, Sapphire ATI Radeon HD7850 PCI Express-16 3.0 2GB, Samsung EVO 840 SSD 1TB

If you are going to try Format Factory trick, make sure you select a lower resolution in the output setting. Otherwise you won't gain anything.

Good luck

Subscribe.

I too have this problem and it only happens if I have speeded up clips or use reverse video in the timetrack. Editing 1080p. Will try some of the proposed solutions. I'm currently specing a system for 4K editing http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vZxnVn and figured that would fix the problem but if it's a PD internal processing flaw then I maybe I should be looking at other editing software because this is a PITA.

The ol' bait and switch worked! I converted the video to 720p and imported to PD13. Made my edits and saved the project.

I then switched out the lower res files for the originals. Opened up the Project again and Produced a final output.

Worked brilliantly.

It's a bit of a shame I now need an extra time-consuming step in my workflow. One of the reasons I moved away from Sony Movie Studio was to take advantage of faster rendering times using my GPU... Now it's almost a wash as I need to convert everything first...

Oh well... At least in Format Factory I can queue up all my files for conversion and get on with other things...

Thanks all for your help. Really appreciated.

I edit mostly 4k 264 MP4 60 Mb and my longest video files have been in the order of 35 GB. Total album capacity can easily exceed 120GB

I DO have the same problem you described IF the shadow files are not completed, same goes for transitions or individual clips that have been modified.

The "bait and switch" is a fast solution but I prefer to just create the shadow files overnight if I work on a big project.

Would be nice if PD14 would speed this up. CPU use is only 15% when shadow files are generated. Could be much higher if there is no editing activity. Or let the GPU do it, the $200.00 GTX960 has encoders including 4K HEVC.

I'm suffering from same situation.

useless 4k feature.... It is very hard to edit h.265 movie clips because of jump.

The navigator jumps to far position.

It's not a machine problem. This power director has an error.

EDIT:

It appears that, on my setup at least, PD14 is not generating shadow hiles from 4K HEVC material.

You can use something like the Samsung Movie Converter or handbrake to output 264 files for editing.

Some users, and I tried it too, convert the original video to SD resolution, edit it and when making the final video replace that SD video file with the original video, using identical file names. Before swapping files the SD file name has to be altered.

-----------------------------

265 takes a lot of CPU power to play unless you have the GTX960 or similar GPU board.

But with shadow files it should not make any difference, it will just take longer to create them. You can tell when the little box on the bottom of the album image turns green.

Using shadow files is a MUST !!

I have no problems at all, even with my 5 year old i7 920, BUT ONLY WHEN USING SHADOW FILES. And I have been editing in 4K for 18 month now.
