Although you are already being given information by very qualified members, I too, will chime in on the DVD question.
A video DVD is designed to be standard definition, it maxes out at 720x480.
The only way around that constraint is AVC-HD video DVD, which allows for high-def video playback, but can only be played by a Blueray player designed to also play AVC-HD video DVDs.
