Powere DVD just spoiled my Friday Night

And I am less than impressed.

All I wanted to do was watch a new Bluray disk - Shine a Light. All I got was frustrated by the rubbish uopgrades that simply failed to work.

I have a LG GGW H20L running under Vista Ultimate.

PowerDVD - whatever the system came with - insisted upon upgrading itself to 7.3. That throws an error - 00002711, unable to load UI_RES.DLL.

Great upgrade that one is.

Uninstall everything, go back to square 1. reinstall the distribution disk; it wants to (again) upgrade itself. Being the nice guy that I am, I comply.

What a waste of time.

On the forums here I see that there's a different upgrade mentioned, with a link. http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/download/patches_112_en_US.html

Ok, I'll play.

Load the disk, guess what? It wants an upgrade. This time from cyberlink.com/BDUpgrade. There's a great site: it's Japanese.

Maybe it's Chinese.

Perhaps it's Korean.

It's certainly not English, and it's certainly not a site from which I can download and install anything.

So ... I'm pissed.

I'm frustrated.

My night has been totally spoiled, becaue of the failed, because of the faulty upgrades provided by Cyberlink.

Anyone got any clues? I'll be willing to bet that Cyberlink won't have any in the short term.

Ossie,

No. And not a peep from Cyberlink so-called support.

Disappointing in the extreme.

Jenny,

You say the link was in English? Perhaps they have fixed tha? I tried it several times, and from two different systems, but with no luck at all.

Nope.

Still Chinese.

Still broken.

Still as useful as a bicycle is to a fish!

And I'm still mad as ....

Exactly.

There is something very seriously wrong with the system when you legitimately buy a disk, but the system prevents you from enjoying your purchase.

This sucks bg time, and Cyberlink's failure to respond promptly is not in any way helpful.

Well, the latest id that the disrespectful turkeys at Cyberlink have changed the file that yo get when you download. No notification of the change, no advice, no apology .... nothing!

As I said, a bunch of unprofessional, disrespectful turkeys. How in the world do they get to hold a job?

The upshot is that the download now - finally - works, probably despite, rather than due to the Cyberlink Turkey farm.

Sheesh: if I treated my customer base the way these nongs handle their's, I'd be out of business before you could say "what a load of rubbish DRM is!"

17 hours - 17 lousy hours - to get to watch a movie.

That's disgusting. Bloody disgusting.

SHAME, Cyberlink, SHAME ON YOU.

And FTR, still not a peep from this disgusting bunch of unprofessional reprobates.

SHAME ON YOU!

I received a similar upgrade message for my bundled PowerDVD, the setup and install menus were in Japanese, I believe. I don't have the character set installed so it looked like the occasional character with a bunch of ??????? in it []y []n I muddled through and it installed the upgrade, but then I had Japanese menus in the player!

ugh!
