clip displaying as black in a movie

I can preview my media just. Most video is from an older Samsung NV7, AVI wrapper, ffmpeg shows these contents:

Duration: 00:00:20.99, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 2452 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: mpeg4 (Simple Profile) (XVID / 0x4449565, yuv420p, 640x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 29.97 tbn, 30k tbc Stream #0:1: Audio: pcm_mulaw ([7][0][0][0] / 0x0007), 8000 Hz, mono, s16, 64 kb/s

When I drag a clip to the movie, at first it is fine. But once I "clip" the front, the remainder plays as black. I hear audio, just no video.

Repro is 100%. I tried copying the keyframe attribs from the front snippet prior to deleting it and pasting into the remainder. No love. Seems like a bug, but is there a workaround? Thanks.

I meant to mention this is PowerDirector 13 and I just installed the update from 2/24/2015. That fixed another bug where my video was always getting rotated 90 degrees when I drug it into a movie.

Hi confundido,
The issue you described has happened before for a video clip* that appeared not to conform to a standard norms, when the clip is split the header applies to the first part only.

*Video clip source was the problem, not the video editing software.

Xvid codec in a video captured using a Samsung NV7?

I suggest you re-render those older clips without editing/splitting them and create a new video which you can then edit.

Dafydd

Thanks fir the response, Dafydd. What format would you recommend? It'll just run 'hem thru ffmpeg before importing. It'd of course like to not lose quality so i'll stay at same resolution, use ample bitrate

Powerdirector is not happy with the XVID encoding. If you convert to any other format (MP4 maybe) Powerdirector may see the video. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

Ah ha, tried it and it works. Converted to h264 and life is happy. I used:

ffmpeg -i [camfile].avi -b 3000000 -vcodec libx264 [samfile].mp3

Sorry about the typos before. Typing on my tablet.

Batch processing completed. I should have time tonight to play with editing a bit more. Obviously I'm a PD newbie. I'll use Search to try to find where folks have discussed stuff but "black movie" wasn't turning up much of use for me. Thanks for the help Dafydd and Carl.
