Version 12 - No longer playing Blu-Rays OR regular DVDs as of 04/19/15

The problem already discovered and posted as a locked topic in this same forum section has happened again. Power DVD 12 Ultra is no longer recognizing or playing Blu-Rays or DVDs. This was the message posted in the locked topic:

"Cyberlink Power DVD cannot access the storage device. Please select another device when playback stops."

  • and -

"Cyberlink Power DVD cannot launch because some of the components appear to be corrupted...."

I have reinstalled multiple times, including patches, and it is not working. According to the previous topic (which was from 2013), the issue was with a Windows Update. My system updated on 04/16/15, and then on 04/19/15 I tried to run a disc and it suddenly would not work. I don't know if there is legacy support for older versions like 12 or not, but I'm hoping this can be patched again.

I have exactly the same problem with PowerDVD13 Ultra which can't no longer read DVD and BR.
I've try to reinstall the soft multiple times, but it's still KO.
My wife had the same problem on her computer with, as mine, OS and plugins (java, .Net) up to date and the same version of PowerDVD.

On 04/21/15, we've installed Microsoft patches KB3020370, KB3048761 and KB3013531 : maybe the origin of the bug ? (On 04/15/15, we've installed 10 Microsoft patches).

version = 13.0.4324.58
SR = DVD140617-06 (DVD131003-01)
ticket ID = CS001463001

Some precisions :
1°) I've try to read few DVD and BR with the "try version" of PowerDVD15 and it doesn't work.
2°) VLC could read the same DVD (but nor BR of course).
3°) MacGo Windows Blu-Ray Player could read these DVD and BR.

It's clearly a bug with PowerDVD.

Will this be solved with a revision or a new patch?

I found the guilty : Comodo Firewall 8.2.0.4508 (updated 9 days ago).

I've try to uninstall my antivirus (Avast free 2015) but it still doesn't work.
Then I've try to uninstall Comodo Firewall and, miracle, It's work again !

Maybe the others members could confirm they use the same firewall ?

After the guilty, the fix for Comodo ...
found here : https://forums.comodo.com/bug-reports-cis/bluray-and-dvd-movies-unable-to-play-uk-t110760.0.html;msg804842#msg804842

"As far as PowerDVD goes go to Advanced Settings/Security Settings/Defense+/HIPS/HIPS Settings. Under "Detect shellcode injections" click on Exclusions and click on the little upwards ^ sign at the bottom. Click on Add and find the PowerDVD.exe and PowerDVDMovie.exe files."

I'v choose Add > Directory = "C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\*" and PowerDVD works fine now.

Thank you emorej74!

I am also using Comodo and despite having tried PowerDVD 13 with all of my av and comodo protection settings turned off, it still didn't work. Appears that the comodo's shellcode injection protection doesn't get disabled when you disable HIPS etc.

I Followed your steps and can confirm PowerDVD is working properly again

I wonder why nothing shows up in the logs at all when comodo must have obviously blocked whatever PowerDVD was doing..

Thanks!

Hoorah!! Thank you so much for figuring this out fellow users... Yes, I too use Comodo Internet Security, and this was the problem indeed. Adding the Cyberlink directory to the exclusions as outlined above solved the problem. Thank you again!

You're welcome : it was a pleasure for me to help you.
I hope tha Cyberlink and Comodo will agree to find a solution (as a patch).

I tried to play a dvd for my daughter this afternoon and it came up saying it could not play and asked me to connect to the internet and enter the product key and activation code. When I went to connect to the internet the message suddenly disappeared and the movie started playing only without any picture. I have no idea what is going on and I cant get back to the message asking me to enter any codes. any help would be greatly appreciated.
