AudioDirector keeps crashing

I have a PowerDirector project that is complete with the exception of the voice over.

I've imported several WAV files and now wish to trim them as needed and move them to the appropriate sections of the video.

The best way I've found to do this is to split (Ctrl+T) each WAV file where needed, then right-click - Edit Audio - AudioDirector and make desired changes. That's all fine and I've taught myself to use AD pretty well.

The issue comes in when I wish to save my changes and return to PowerDirector. About half the time when I click Close, AD asks me if I would like to save my changes and return to PD; I simply click yes, and everything is hunky dory. The other 50% of the time, when I click Close in AD, it locks. up. I get no pop-up about the file changes. Nothing. I simply get the windows warning that the program has crashed and windows is "looking for a solution to the problem". When it finally force closes I am returned to PD and of course all my edits are not saved in the WAV file and I have to repeat them.

I am using a 32 bit Windows 7 machine with an Intel i5-3470 and 4GB of RAM.

I can't say ADR has ever crashed (for me) during round trip editing but, yes, enormously frustrating.

As I understand it, ADR sometimes crashes/stops working for you while it's saving the adjusted audio clip. Is that correct?

With round trip editing as you're approaching it, the modified audio clips are stored in PowerDirector's designated output folder. If your original file was named "VoiceOver_1", the modified clip from ADR would be named "VoiceOver_1 (0)"

Next time you experience a crash, it would be worth checking your PDR output folder to see if the modified audio clip was saved. If it was you could manually import it into PDR to save re-editing.

That, of course, doesn't resolve the cause of the crashes. Intermittent problems like that are difficult to isolate.

In some cases it might be preferable to simply delete a small section of audio right in PD; is that possible?

Also can I add fade-in/fade-out of audio sections in PD or must these be applied elsewhere?

To remove sections of audio clips (or any media) in PDR, you can split the clip before and after the "dud" piece, then remove it & leave the gap (so it doesn't put your other audio out of sync.

Fades can be set in the mixing room or by manipulating the level in the timeline. I've seen this referred to as the "rubber band" method.

And, of course. you could drop in an prefix or postfix audio fade transition from the transition room.

I have noticed that if I use 24 bit recording for my sound (external to be imported), it basically guarantees crash at the time returning to PowerDirector. I can use 96kHz sampling rate no problem as it is in 16 bit format. I haven't checked how long video I can make by editing my sound by other programs (that is sad) and using 96/24, but I do know that it isn't longer than 30min and might not be longer than 15. The PowerDirector just locks up and stops responding. Now it is possible that my on board video (intel 4600 and i7 4790 CPU) lacks and that's why I've been waiting for better video card (GeForce 970). But that doesn't explain the weakness of Audiodirector. What is the max quality for that program in 2Channel. It doesn't seem to able to handle too much. An other thing the consider is that all the format have to be same if the programs are expected to work together, no conversion back and forth. That is 96/16 max for me so far.

I don't typically work with such "high resolution" audio files, but I downloaded some 24 / 96 audio tracks from links found on this site & used them to mix & produce a 24-bit 96kHz file. The audio clip is 17:16:11 in PDR.

Trying to replcate your steps, I sent the audio track from PDR to ADR for editing, made some minor changes to equaliser settings & clicked Back to return to PDR, half expecting the crash you experienced. The was no crash. Not even a stutter. The edited clip is now sitting in PDR's timeline.

The PC I'm using is an older machine, with far less capability than yours, so I doubt that's a factor here.

Is there any other information you can provide that might help us find a possible cause? I'm also curious to know whether you know of some way to produce video (using PDR) that has a 24 / 96 audio track. I cannot see how.
