I am assuming that a produced section is the same as an entire movie?

Yes.

If by "entire movie" you mean a duration of 1,5 - 2 hours, you might want to consider
the strenght of your PC > what/how much you are doing to the movie, as producing
the new file will probably need some horsepower.

Personally, I pre-produce a lot. It's in my work-flow.
The use of several tracks with many "things going on" in the edit may mean trouble
when exceeding 1-5 min.

Does "produce" mean the same thing as "render"? Trying to get all the definitions straight, lol.

Yes produce is where it does rendering. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.
