All of a sudden my Fx stopped working properly (among other things)

As my title suggests, I am baffled as to what is all of a sudden going on. I have had PD13 for about a few months now without issue and all of a sudden i'm having issues. I have a fairly new Pc with 8G ram and running windows8.1.
The first issue is when I tried use the "blur" effect and mask out a face on a video. I followed all appropriate steps and when getting to the masking section I get nothing but a black screen.
Also to show what is going on with my fx not working I tried adding another effect for "old time movie" and as you can see in the screenshot I have most parameters almost at maximum and yet you see nothing is happening in the video. keep in mind that the video has been changed to black and white previously. This effect did work.
I also don't know if its related but when trying to modify the sound via audiodirector, I would get 94% done and then a screen saying AD is already in use and get an error.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

Hi tarkus1

Can you follow steps A and B in this post and post your DxDiag results?

Also, your screen captures are helpful but they would be much easier to view on the forum if you could crop them in your favorite editor to show only the relevant info. You could also hold down the <ALT> button when you press <Print Screen> to only capture the active window rather than your entire desktop

Thank you very much for the reply. I'll try that this evening when I get home from work.
regarding the cropping, I do apologize as it seemed everything I tried just wasn't working as intended. Then when I figured I would start over from scratch with the pics, I couldn't delete them.
Anyway, thanks again and I'll post any results this evening.

Why do you have your video on track 2 rather than track 1? Is there something there that we don't see? The effect youi are adding in that location would apply to track 1 but there seems to be nothing there.

Perhaps I'm missing something in the image. .

Whoa! stevek just solved the reason why your FX aren't working! The FX track only applies to the video tracks above it, but in your project your clips are below, so you would A) see no effect when previewing, and B) see a blank Mask window as shown in your second screen capture.

I didn't even look at your project and I jumped straight to the technical issues.

To fix the FX issue, either move the Track 2 content up to Track 1 or move the FX track anywhere below Track 2 and your FX should work like you expect. To move it, click and drag the track icon at the left edge and release it over the icon of a lower track.

We still have the AD5 crash to figure out, so the DxDiag results will still be helpful!

Thank you two very much for taking the time to point this newbie in the right direction. I can't believe it was that simple although I sure am glad it was.
As far as why the AD5 wasn't working, I tried other files first to see if they would work and they worked ok. For some reason its just the one file (that I'm aware of) that had the issue. So as long as its just this isolated incident I think I'll be ok.
So far, so good and thanks again guys. it is greatly appreciated.

Glad to hear it

If you find that another clip gives you trouble, you can try converting it to another format first by using any of the free video converters out there. You can also attach it to a reply here or start a new post to see if the problem occurs on other machines or if it's something specific to your computer.

Good luck!

Well done people, made me smile. Having an image of what another editor is looking at, really does help.
