I bought a samsung external blu ray writer 3 months ago but it won't play new blu rays (films from 2012 are fine) the software says it needs to update, it does and then when the disc reloads, it says it needs to update again. I'm going around in circles and it doesn't exactly make me want to buy a new version. I've updated my firmware and the discs have even played with a more basic free version of other software.

I seem to be in the same boat Vladel. I was able to play 300 #2 BluRay, but not SinCity2 Blu-Ray, not 3D.

Kept getting the 'update' which was quick 'ping' on internet connection and update confirmation, then 'update' again.

I looped through that for awhile and ended up registerring 3 times in the process.

Finally got out of the update loop and BluRay would load all the way up to 99% and then at 100% would error by freeze Power DVD10.

I pass all BluRay Advisor except 'network'. I run an off-line machine with 'dial-up' access.

and pass all 3D Advisor except monitor (display) I wouldn't watch 3D anyway.

I was able to watch 300 #2 with no internet - initiated the BluRay with high speed internet, but failed due to non-digital monitor I had VGA monitor hooked to SDI adaptor into digitalvideo card. Brought machine home and used digital SDI cable to monitor and watched BluRay fine.

So, hope you come back Vladel for possible advice. As for myself, I plan on purchasing sample BluRays and taking my machine to high speed interent on week-end to see if some kind of fix happens.

I have read the post regarding 'installing a patch for the retail version to OEM version will not work' inside this pasted thread link

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/31286.page

So, not knowing what path I have taken, due to trying for hours and hours, I will un-install, then re-install Power DVD 10 from the disc, launch and follow update link provided by the OEM software.

I would easily purchase the current Power DVD 14 if I knew it would work, but first would like to see some consistancy with Power DVD 10, that I have used prior year with Blu-ray, but not for a year, re-installed and having problems.

Cyberlink Power DVD10 works (for now)
Un-install, re-install
And trick is to follow OEM 'pop-up' updates
For now - meaning, no internet connection asked for at present
I think where I went wrong last week was when the 'update' pop-up occurred (next day) I knew I had already updated, so I installed the update from the Cyberlink site. My thoughts are that this 'update' actually should say 'connect to internet to acknowlege royalties' or something to that effect.

There are two (or more) updates - OEM updates, such as LG or Samsung bundled software with hardware Blu-Ray drivers and then there is 'purchased stand alone version' from Cyberlink update. Resulting in two different updates and one doesn't work with the other.

So, so far, my PowerDVD10 is playing my two sample Blu-Rays (dated 2014) purchased from 'used store'.

Next step is to go back to Video rental and re-rent SinCity 2 and try. Another test for me is to try 'the next day' - to see if PowerDVD has to connect to internet (for a quick 'ping') to continue with Blu-Ray loading.

Nope.

Cannot watch Sin City 2 Blu-Ray.

The sound plays. but no picture. I did get flashes of the picture, but just a quick still image, then nothing.

So, what is needed? I wonder if a fast internet connection is needed as all I have is a slow dial-up internet connection.

Is someone able to tell by reading the cover of the Blu-Ray as to what is required to watch it?

Is it probably related to the fact that your Blu-ray may be specially protected? My solution is to backup my new Blu-ray Hunger Games: MockingJay pt. 1 on my computer first, and then upload to PowerDVD for viewing, that works for me.
