PowreDirector 13 - capture from Hi8 MM (via USB) keeps stopping - copyright protected problem

Just purchhase/installed power director 13 to convert Hi8 mm to digital (dvd).
The hookup is through kworld dangol with USB and Component connections. The connecting to the Hi8 mm camera is on the component side. The connection to the PC with Window 7 Professional 64bit equipped with PowerDirector 13 Ultra is on the USB side.

The capture seem to come thru the TV interface on the PD13. When i start the capture it stops shortly after (1-5 min) complaining about copyright protected content. This is family recorded film/content - they are about 7-8 yrs old.

Is there any configuration setting to make PD13 keep capturing without stoping?

Thanks

In short, no and I think it's unlikely Cyberlink will do anything about it either. I've posted some suggestions in the other thread.

As you have PD13 I recommend you to post your query in that forum as this one is for "outdated" versions. Regards,
Mike

I can not find it online, but I seem to recall it was mentioned in the forums at one time that Hi8 is no longer officially supported. Of course, my memory is not so good these days. Have you checked the list of supported cameras? __________________________________

Freeman, thanks for the feedback. I hope someone from CyberLink will reply with update. I hope that I did not blow up US $84!

Jaime-esque, Thank you!

this should be device agnostic as the input to the computer is from thru a device with USB i/f toward the computer and component i/f toward camera. So any camera of any media becomes transparent to the computer/PD

Yes, your setup is device agnostic so should work although you must be aware that, unlike pure digital camcorders, the hardware and capture software has to be able to keep up with the analog data that's streaming off the tape. That's one of the reasons I suggested using the Kworld capture software if any was supplied. Alternatively, as I said, you could try Windows Movie Maker (which is not included in Windows 7 but is available as a free download) as this has been claimed to work in other threads about copyright issues.

I don't use Power Director's capture module even though my cam is pure digital as I had issues with it (too long ago now to remember what they were). I use the software that came with the cam and import the files into PD. Never had any problems that way. Regards,
Mike

I am not sure why the specific device should matter, but capture complaints on here are almost always Hi-8. There are some good, free third party capture programs that produce a video which can be imported into PD. __________________________________

The copyright warnings often mean that the tapes are degraded so there is no signal or that there are gaps in the tapes. Depending on your operating system, try capturing using Windows Movie Maker wihich is probably on your computer or by feeding the video from the Hi8 to another digital camcorder that has pass through functionality. If these are important to you then the cost of renting a digiral camcorder with pass through may not be a consideration.

By the way, why are you not using the software that came with the USB device.

Also make sure that if you are using a desktop that you are using a USB port on the back of your computer. Don;t use a hub or a front USB port; they don;t have enough power.

Sorry Fenman, I think I repeated a lot of what you said !

This is another one where(sorry, Cyberlink, I've got to say this) an outside, or third party software option is best used to capture the content, be it from Hi8, VHS or Beta, then bring the captures into Power Director for editing and disc authoring(burning).
