Ok Loaded Director 13. Attached my HDV Legria CANON Camcorder to the fire wire 1394a port. Switched cam on. Windows 7 64 bit recognized cam, loaded drivers. On device manager HDV 40 CAM Icon is shown. Drivers up to date - no problems listed.
Switched Cam on - booted up PD13. On capture the default External or optical drive icon is highlighted. All others are not. So clicking on Capture from an HDV Camcorder icon. Nothing. Cable checked cam is powered by mains not battery.. So nothing. Of all the functions only
external or optical and microphone can be highlighted for selection. So the other six are washed out. do not highlight for selection.I was not concerned as thought the software will know the cam is connected.

Any one know what I need to do (exactly). ?
I also am still trying to load Power dvd 14 as message states Not enough disk space. I have a NEW 3TD HDD?. Another member had 6TB Yet although mentioned by several members no solution is given on the forum. Seems very odd especially when its an old problem. No download appears to be available. What happened to the other members - does not one give solutions. I do not like this ticket business which can take days.
thanks for any help.

DAN0007,
it is odd that your HV40 is recognized, yet no capture.
Have you had a successful capture previously, using PD or other software?
Have you tried Windows Movie maker? It's fairly dependable.
If it was a driver problem I would expect a capture, but maxing out at just a few kilobytes and an icon.

I have Canon HV20. When I had Win7, I had to go back to the 'Legacy' 1394 driver.

In this order:
Turn on computer
make sure audio volume is not muted and at comfortable level
Connect the HV40 via firewire and turn the camcorder to Playback mode
When Windows recognizes the camcorder, you should here a sound.
Go to Device manager and see if the Canon HV40 is listed in devices
If it is, any editor should be able to 'see' it.

Launch PD13 and try to capture.
If it doesn't work, download HDVSplit (free) and see if that works.
If that doesn't work, you will need the legacy driver. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Many thanks Both. Yes windows recognizes HDV40 on device manager. Drivers 2006 old but says up to date or latest is up to date.
PD13 I only have optical or microphone capture options ie the icons highlight (blue edge) when cursor on them. But nothing on the HDV or other cam icon.
Now I have an Asas Sabertooth MB with one rear fire wire PORT. Another is on front of case - which I used initially but realised the MB does not cater for IEEE 1394 on the MB its self. So cable is loose inside case. (thought this was great at first) But connecting to the rear still have same problem. note my MB says rear port is 1394a. Canon HDV manual States just 1394 if that is relevant.
Did hear a sound with audio on. Pressed play footage running on cam .but nothing on PD3 at all. The default is always on the optical drive icon.
The only problem I can see on devices is a Marvell 91xx Config ATA Device- I do not know what this is ,However properties tries to load drivers via Internet without success. tried several times. not sure if this is connected to above problem.
Canon Legria HV40 is on devices no problem. As nothing at all happens ? drivers ok.

So I have not tried HDV split. is that ok with PD13 - ? Won't reduce quality or other. I checked camcorder menu AV to DV is off, There is mention of wrong signal standard check manual of connected source in canon manual. Not sure how to check this 1394a port in case faulty. never been used before. as new build pc. First time used rear fire wire port never captured footage before.
Many thanks for help both. Dan

I prefer HDVspit because it captures from tape and uses the date/time from tape as file name. That way the clips are displayed in Windows Explorer the way they were taken.

Just Google it. It's free. If you can't capture with HDVSplit, you will need to revert to Legacy Windows 1394 drivers. I had to do that with my HV20 on Windows 7.

This issue was fixed in Win8. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

Many Thanks GG. Will try this and let you know outcome.
I now realize the sound scores are VERY limited.Only ones highlighted in blue are available at top of magic music. Not even one clip for all the genres are available. Only for purchase $99 each set. Disappointing as assumed Director suite 3 claims $800 of goodies. Having trouble getting a photo plus 3 effects to work together freezes. Ok I have own music but always liked this with Pinnacle as gets you started with type of sound your looking for. I don't suppose uninstalling and reinstall may solve problem. No probably not.
