Cuda or not cuda

In my mailbox this morning, a friend told me about the mess installations
had made regarding what goes where in PD 13. Not a seldom occurance, I’m afraid.
PD seems to live it’s own life. One day it is working perfectly well. The next day, out
of the blue, some things may have changed - or do not work at all.

I am not a heavy user of effects and transitions so it is very seldom I tick all content in fx.
I did this morning out of curiosity, also because of the discussions regarding graphic cards.
Somewhat baffled, I now get a lot of cuda marks when browsing all fx content.
These are not displayed with green cuda if going in to each NB effect listing.
Do these now work with my graphic card GeForce GTX 770M?
The oddest thing: some do - and some crash PD immediately.

There are a few effects I can’t spot as the same as in all content.
In Nvidia control panel, PD 13 was not listed strangely, only PD 12.
I added PD 13 manually.
Confusing? Well......

I have attached which NB effect packages are installed.

About nVidia control panel - you have a laptop with two video cards - one integrated in the i3-i5-i7 newer generation CPU and one discrete (nVidia).
For power saving reasons the will work alternate - 2D apps will use the Intel, while some listed 3D apps will use the nVidia.
All this is governed by "Optimus". You can force certain apps to run with the nVidia card instead - either at run time or permanently). You have to select the app if is not listed automatically by the newer nVidia drivers.
I don't have access to a laptop with Optimus right now to post exact steps - my son took his to college

Maybe this will help:

About a year ago, this was an issue; this laptop does not have 2 cards.
At least there's only 1 listed.
I have 2 options: to use "global" - GTX 770M
- or set programs to use nVidia GTX 770M.

System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.
System Model: G750JX

Anyway, the thing which seems odd to me is that some "cuda" works, others do not.
And they really do not! Immediate crash.

Your laptop specs: https://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_ROG_G750JX/specifications/
The listed CPU specs: http://ark.intel.com/products/75116/Intel-Core-i7-4700HQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_40-GHz
You will notice that the CPU has listed at processor graphics Intel® HD Graphics 4600.

I found some topics related to your laptop and nVidia issues, not sure if they help:

I never use hardware encode for video editing because the quality is not better than software encode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PowerDirector 365

Quality of CUDA encoder is the same, it is programmed software and runs on different multi-processor (the cores inside video card chip).

Pure hardware encoders present in newer cards are different (nVidia, ATI or Intel)...

Hello 1 Nina.
I have been having the same problems with my GTX titan GPU, it will not accept hardware acceleration within Power Director 12 or 13.with the newest driver .When I produce the GPU shows only 4 to 6% usage and the CPU up to 100%( Intel 3930K) on 2011 socket, Asus 79pro motherboard. When one pays $1200 for a GPU and can not be used only within this editing program I wanted to find out why? so I contacted Nvidia customer support. To me it seems to be CUDA utilization, as the Titan has 2600 CUDA cores, what a waste of money and resources, this is the answer I received.

SoNic67:

Thank you for taking the time to find info.
There is no way I can access an onboard card- if any there. (I do not want to / need to open the thing.)
I have set the 770M to highest performance, but it has not made any change to the
number of cuda marked fx's. PD crashes still.
I don't mind that much. As I have said; I am not a heavy user of effects, and I reckon I can
do without the ones which cause PD to crash.
I just think it odd, the fx's marked with cuda when displaying all content - and not
having the cuda mark on any fx when displayed under each NB effect group.

Graeme1946:

I can turn on hardware acceleration, both in preferences and in Produce.
A couple of days ago I posted this screen capture:

http://youtu.be/hODpySOIQZQ

It's all very odd.
But you are right about only PD 12/13.
About a year ago we were chasing solutions for these newer cards+Win 8/8.1.
I found it strange that 3-4 year old programs all worked well and as expected on this laptop
while PD 12 struggled big time. In the end patches released made things to the better.

I have read the answer you got from nVidia.

Nina
