Which Video Card?

Hi all,

Just installed PD12 as I'm going to be doing so video editing using input from a GoPro and my digital camera. Will be rendering 1920x1024 HD probably in MP4.

My present system is a little old but I think an upgrade to the video card should help with the rendering speed. Here's what I have at present.

i7-2600
W7 x64
8GB low latency RAM
SSD for the OS
"Standard" HDD for everything else
P8H77-M PRO M/B with integrated Intel HD video
HD 6450 Video Card

I have two 24" LED Monitors, one connected to the 6450 and one to the integrated video. Both via HDMI.

My thinking was to remove the 6450 and replace it with something else and connect both monitors to the new video card while disabling the integrated video.

As money is tight my thoughts on video cards are as follows:-

1. Sapphire Radeon R7 240 with Boost and DDR5
2. Nvidia GTX 650
3. Radeon HD 7770
4. R7 260x

Any other recommendations or comments appreciated.

Edit1: BTW this PC is not used for gaming at all.
Edit2: I'll just throw another card into the mix. The ASUS R7 260x....

TIA

Greg

I have no direct experience with SSDs but another gent on this forum suggests using it for video editing, not the OS. Hopefully he can comment further. If you would like more on how to use your SSD, PM me and I can give examples. I have a separate HHD just for file storage. Kinda like "My Documents".

I'm running The AMD FX-8320 8 Core with a GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

In most cases, when I'm working on sermons, I can render a preview in Realtime using Full HD Preview Resolution with minimal hangups. When I get more then three tracks of video combined, I have to lower it to High or Normal and I still get some hangups during multi-video transitions and effects.

I'm also running a Three Monitor rig as the GeForce has a VGA, HDMI and DVI. It's really nice to have the extra workspace when I undock the preview window.

Without knowing how each card compares to your current card and each other, I'm reluctant to express an opinion. Especially when it "seems" like your rig is a bit behind mine. (My first new comp in 10 years)

I hope you found this helpful,

What kind of crap is that? Down grade our drivers so Cyberlink doesn't have to come out with a quick patch? The title of the page specifies PD13...

Date and location (link) of that quote please.

Never mind; I found it. It may be that nVidia screwed up and will release a fix soon --- or there may be a more basic issue.

Note: That warning also is listed in the PD 12 specs page.

Perhaps there is something here that will explain it more. It seems that a lot of functionality has been dropped with the newest drivers, http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/344.11/344.11-win8-win7-winvista-desktop-release-notes.pdf

Warning: Long and involved document.

I'm not familiar with the Graphics cards you mentioned, but I have an NVidia GTX 660 on my main machine, and it is more than sufficient. It looks like your PC is well up to the task.

My main PC (not the one whose specs are listed below) is an i7 950 3.07 GHz with an SSD for the OS, and it works fine. Make sure you do all the editing, producing, etc. on the SSD and then export final results to your HDD to avoid filling up the SSD. Dell Precision 7510 Laptop

Thanks @BillyR. I'm leaning towards the R7 260x for value for money and I'm getting away from the Nvidia driver issues too.
