Capture DV without Firewire control (no timecode on tape)

I have two DV tapes shot on a very humid trip where my camcorder was also aging and those tapes have no timecode but most of the video and audio content is good.

I am trialing PD12 at present but Firewire control stops the capture process so I would like to turn this off or find some other way to capture the DV content.

I can capture the content in analogue format but this is a path I would prefer to avoid so any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a DV camera to play the tapes? You should be able to just record while you play the tape.
If Powerdirector refuses to record, try Microsoft Movie Maker.

Alternative:
If you have an adapter for your analog DV tape to play in a standard VHS Machine, you can use a Good Quality USB capture device to capture the video and audio from the tape (no time code needed).

You can only do SD capture that way (720x480/576).

I had a similar problem. My new computer does not have a firewire port, so I was not able to capture some MiniDV content using the firewire controls. I was, however, able to capture the content manually by plugging the camcorder into the USB port and setting the camcorder into "VCR" or "playback" mode. Just start your editing program and set it to "capture video" mode. Locate the camcorder under "available devices" (or whatever equivalent procedure your program uses). Then hit "Play" on the camcorder and "record" on your capture screen. You, unfortunately, will have to manually split the video content later in the editor, but it's better than nothing.

Alternatively, you can always send the tapes in to have the content recorded onto DVDs. Your local photo or video shop should be able to provide the name of a local service. Or you can always find one online. Also, Costco provides this service as well.

You can buy Firewire cards to put in your computer.

Depending on what kind of expansion slots you have in your computer. Price is $20 and up.

Thanks for the reply Carl312, I will try Movie Maker and failing that I will just go the analogue route. One way or the other I will get the footage off.
