Using PD12 Ultra, capturing HDV content from Sony HVR-M25U deck via firewire... In preview, footage is coming in pixelly and jumpy and it does not improve in edit mode... Sometimes footage ingests OK, but audio & video are out of sync. System is a new Lenovo K450, Windows 8.1, 64 bit, intel i5, Nvidia GT 635 graphics card with firewire capture card.. Please advise.. Thanks in advance!

Does your Sony HVR-M25U deck have software that needs to be installed?
Cameras usually do not go via the Capture Module of PowerDirector.

Many cameras are treated as removable Hard Drives, you copy the video files to a folder on the computer's hard drive.

Then you use the Import function in Powerdirector to import the Videos.

Thanks, Carl. I'm not aware of any software for the M25U. It's an HDV tape deck with firewire in/out and HDMI out.

I have been reading the manual on your Tape deck.

One of the things it says on Page 57 of the HVR-M25AU Operating Manuals
Before Dubbing, you must set the format in which you want to output signals. Make [HDV/DV SEL] (page 70) and [i.LINK SET] (page 72) settings in the [IN/OUT REC] menu.

I suspect that you have the output set to SD and not HD.

You want HVR-M25AU Operating Manuals.

This is really out of my area of expertise.

Yes, I did confirm the HDV/DV output option and it is set correctly. Might the capture issue be on the receiving end of the equation? Something amiss with capture or graphics cards ? Drivers? All seems up-to-date and desktop is a new system..

It is sure possible that is where you lose resolution.

Can you display HD output from the tape deck in any program on the computer?

I.E. Windows Media Player, VLC, or a lot of commercial players.

Can you copy the files from the Tape Deck?
By the Way that is a really nice Tape Deck.

As I said this is not my area of expertise.

Sometimes background programs interfere with the capture.
What antivirus are you running. Either turn it off or pause it.

What else do you have running? Use mdconfig (start) to minimize the programs that you don't need to start at boot. If you are not familiar with msconfig download and try the free "Lite" version of "Soluto". It will tell you what does not need to be started at boot.

Are you recording any copyrighted and protected videos?

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks, guys.. I've looked at these things.. Carl - the PC sees the HDV deck as a device but there is no way to "control" it.. I don't know how to import the footage via Win Media Player.. The HDV deck contains footage I shot, recorded via HD-SDI input on another deck - and does not save media as a "files" like a PC would..
Steve - I use AVAST for anti-virus, and I turned it off and brought CPU usage down to 2% ! Same issue of pixelly & jumpy capture, though... This is original footage I shot so it's not an issue of HDCP or copyright encryption.
Very puzzling for this beefy desktop and really handicapping my editing future.. I'm open to more direction.. Thanks!

VideoJim,

I have been searching the internet and reading Powerdirector Help.

Capturing from an HDV Camcorder

You can capture video footage you shot with an HDV* camcorder. Use the capture from an HDV camcorder option only if your camcorder connects to your computer using an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) cable. To a capture scene from your HDV camcorder, use the capture player controls (record, stop, fast forward, rewind, etc.) underneath the capture preview window.

If your HDV camcorder connects to your computer via a USB connection, just import the video files directly from your camcorder, as if it was another hard drive on your computer. See Importing Media for information on importing video files from your computer.

Note: * optional feature in CyberLink PowerDirector. Check the version table on our web site for detailed versioning information.

Which Capture device are you using in Powerdirector 12 Capture Module?
For HD video you should be using the Capture HDV camcorder.

The only button that lights up is that HD Camcorder option.. PD12 does recognize the Sony deck that's plugged in via firewire. I captured other content last night and although during preview the audio/video were out of sync, once captured it plays nicely on the editline.. Still don't know why particular footage captures OK and the other is pixelly & jumpy..

Another mystery!

I can understand why during the capture the audio and video are out of sync. The computer may not be able to do all to the jobs at once, so the preview suffers.

The important thing is, the video/audio is OK after capture.

If the rest of your captures are OK, then blame it on the Tape.

Carl - Mystery, indeed! What would be the weak link that makes the video/auduio out of sync? Is 8Gb RAM enough? Is the graphics card (GT 635) robust enough? What else? That might be causing the pixelly effect on the other job... Thanks !

Problem still exists... Just captured a 2-hour show, shot in HDV from Sony HDV deck into PD12 via firewire. After a few minutes, capture preview appears pixelly & jittery.. Once captured, and in edit mode - same thing - picture stutters & pixelates regularly... Dropping preview quality from HD to SD does not help.. System seems robust enough to handle - New Lenovo K450, Windows 8.1, 64 bit, intel i5, Nvidia GT 635 graphics card with firewire capture card... Very frustrating and hampering my editing projects!! Any one experience this ?

Poor performance of the computer can cause all kind of jerks and pauses.

I do not think you have posted the specs of your computer for us to look at.

Part B. Please just attach the TEXT files, zip or rar is not necessary. The text files are small. It is much easier to just open the text file.

VideoJim.

For some reason the forum is not accepting my reply.

Your Video, sound and IEEE 1394 drivers need to be updated.

Each of these components has up-to-date drivers.. Did you see something lacking in the diagnostic ??

Hi Video Jim
Just a thought really as I've never tried to use PowerDirector to capture material from another source ( yet!).
If its jumpy footage while playing in the timeline AND sync appears to be an issue also in the timeline, it could it be that you are using too high a picture quality setting in the Preview Setting, see attached file.
This always happens to me when I need to check the pic quality of my footage, I set it to the highest setting to have a look at the material and then forget to put it back to a setting that my old PC can handle ( in my case it's High Resolution ) just to edit.
What you describe is exactly what I get while trying to edit with the wrong Preview Quality set on my PC.
I've even had to resort to using the "Shadow Files" function.

I think it's down to the overall picture complexity OR the amount of data that you've captured in the scenes. Some scenes will have a bland background maybe a wall or a curtain with little moving subject detail, while other scenes will have lots of moving figures giving more data to be processed by your PC and the software. I've been using PD for several versions now and found that sometimes I have to try different things when the timeline becomes complex.

Another thought, Have you tried to use theRender Preview in the timeline to see if that helps to resolve any sync OR playing issues?

I believe that PD does not use a GFX card to process images while JUST editing, as some of the other more costly edit packages do ( it would be great if it did though )!

I'll admit that I'm not very computer literate having had to use the d** things for many years. I've found that, at times, they can have more headaches than I do But sometimes just checking all the options on a great forum such as this can help!

Hope it's given you some more ideas of where to check/look.

Ummm, just done my accounts and maybe it's time for a new PC

Cheers

The video and sound drivers are a year old, there are newer drivers available on the manufacturer's web site.

NVidia
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

Sound driver Realtek
http://www.realtek.com.tw/default.aspx

The 1394 (Firewire) driver in the same date (2013)
The Firewire Driver may have to come from your computer's manufacturer.

Yes, you have to use CAPTURE for HDV via firewire.

Try to capture using HDVsplit (freeware) and play the .m2t file using Windows Classic Player (freeware). This will eliminate if it a PD12 issue. If the problem still exists, it could be tape drop out. Depends on how old the tape is and when the video was recorded. There are many reasons why tape can lose magnetism. I was having many capture issues when I installed Win8.1 and turned out to be the tape!
