I would like the ability to save the original filename as the default filename.

Hello,

I have tried to find a way to avoid having to rename every project that I import into Powerdirector 12 when I save it.
Is there a way to always use the original title and just add a number at the end?

Also, I almost always change the window size and position when I open PD12. Is there a way to always remember the window size and position when I open the program?

One more thing. I almost always produce my projects with the same parameters, (MPEG-4 1920 by 1080 30fps) Is there a way to use these parameters as default?

You can use File > Save Project As, you can then add the number.
Do not use the Save icon on the top of the interface.

Keyboard Shortcut for 'Save Project As'=Ctrl+Shift+S
Press all three keys at the same time.

Thanks for the reply.

Okay, maybe all these things aren't possible with this program right now, but I see no reason why they shouldn't be.

Can anyone direct me to a place where I can submit ideas to the programmers of this fine software?

Okay, for clarification, when using the 'Save Project As', are you saying to navigate to the folder where the original video file is located, then select that title to save as, then add a number? Currently all of my projects are saved by the name of 'Produce' by default.

If so, I appreciate the info, but I would like to just have the original file name preserved as the default. I've used other editing programs that do, and it makes things quicker and easier.

Hi Rick -

Carl has given you one of the best options there is in PowerDirector. What you want, it seems, is a "template" for a project... much like you can create for Word, Publisher or other software.

Another possibility is - once you have your Opening title sequence assembled - save the project as (say) "Rick's Title".pds

Now - for future projects all you need to do is put the scrubber at the start of the timeline and go to File > Insert Project & Voila! There's your title sequence, right where you want it.

It's shown in this tutorial (the link to which is tucked away in the locked threads at the top of the forum) - http://youtu.be/RnOrIdfUVSA?t=2m41s - that link takes to to the exact point.

For repeated sequences (like channel logos etc), I often just import the produced file of the sequence & insert it. Easy.

Is there a way to always remember the window size and position when I open the program?
Is there a way to use these parameters as default?

No & No is the short answer

Cheers - Tony

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

If I may, I would like to respectfully try to clarify my small complaint.

I use PD12 to edit many different movies, I would always prefer to keep the original file name.
Instead, PD12 always renames the files to Produce, and in doing so, requires me to enter the original title again.

Maybe you explained how to preserve the original file name without having to re-enter it, and I still can't figure it out.
If not, I think this would be a nice feature that would make things a little more convenient for people like me.

Oh - THAT title!

You can reset that in Preferences but, of course, it still needs to be modified for each produced file. Whatever way it goes - when you go to produce a video in PD it will (by default) use the file name set in Preferences. I don't think that helps with what you're after.

Sorry - the word "title" is used in so many different contexts within PD. Now I see which one you were asking about.

Cheers - Tony

Well, thanks anyway.

I think this would be a handy feature...many times I will produce a movie and decide it needs some small tweaks, then after the tweaks are applied I have to rename the movie again!

Is there a way to submit these ideas to the coders or developers of PD12?

If I entenci right.
1 - save to project file with the same name 1 click on diskette icon.
2 - save to video file with the same name by adding a number:
In Produce / output Folder / type the name, "the first time".
To save again with the same name must delete (remove) the file from the media room.
Produce click on the file name already saved.
PD. warns that the file already exists, confirm to overwrite.
If you want to keep the name and the previous file, click the name and add a number.

Note: By clicking on the file name, it is copied to the box name, add the number there.

So what I do here.

Thanks for the info. It's not exactly what I was looking for, but I do appreciate it.

Rick, if I understand correctly, you'd like the title you apply to the saved project to be the same after it's produced, which is currently "Produce". I agree and am not clear on why it isn't done that way.

You can ask questions and offer suggestions at:

Thanks.

For clarity, say I have a dozen home movie files that I need to edit.
I have already named these movie files, so I can easily find the ones I'm looking for.
The movies have names such as 'Bobs birthday party' and '4th of July barbecue'.

All I want is for the program to remember the original file names, or in other words, remember the original title and not rename the movie to 'Produce'

Edit: Thanks for the link, I submitted my suggestions there.

I hear you. I guess what I do is just immediately go to the file where it's saved after producing and look for the "Produce" with the highest number, which will generally be the one I just did. Then I rename it.

As for why PD doesn't do it as we'd wish, the only thing I can think of is that maybe they don't want to assume that you don't have a file by that name already. For example, you might have imported a clip/video and named it what you also intend to call the produced clip/video, e.g., "California Trip." I don't know, just a thought.

Edit: Okay, I just reread your last post. Just so I understand, the title you want applied to the produced file, is it the one you named the clip you imported, or the title you gave the saved project in PD?

You understand correctly.

If I have already assigned a unique name to the file, I just want the name to stay the same. I don't want everything renamed to 'Produce', Produce 1, Produce 2...etc.

Well, I submitted my ideas to customer support and they basically said something to the effect of "We understand your concerns, but those features aren't available in this product".

So, I guess things will remain the same. You know, I have other, 'less sophisticated' video editing software that remembers filenames and such. Too bad Cyberlink doesn't seem interested in tweaking a few things to make the overall editing experience a little more smooth.

All you have to do is name the file like you want the filename to be in the Produce filename Text box.
By the way you can copy the filename or Project name and paste that name in the produce text box.

You do not have to take the default file name "Produce" just delete and name what you want.

If you want to go to the trouble of changing the preferences on every project, you can do so. It is much easier to just copy and paste the name or Type the name in the Produce Text box.

Do that before you click "Start".

Thanks, I know. That's how I always do it.

It's not too hard to do, but it seems like we should have an option to always retain the original filename and then add a number after that.

It would be one less step.

I do not find it to be much burden to type or paste the name.

Thank you for the reply.

I know this is an old post, but I understand you completely. And I agree that this is a much-needed feature. Even in PowerDirector 16, file management remains a bit of a mess. It takes a lot of manual attention and effort to avoid winding up with a default produce folder filled with files that are all named some version of "produce". Similar problem with any related files, like audio files, which seem to get scattered wherever PD happens to slam a new version of them (with every single audio edit). It would make a lot of sense to do non-descriptive editing on the audio files in exactly the same way as it handles video files, which is to say that PD16 should not create a new audio file with every edit.

It would also be much better if PD16 would save all files with the same name as one of the original video file. Or in a produce folder that is named the same as the import folder. Or just about anything that would keep all of the files for a given project together in an easily-recognizable location and name.

If I had any reason to believe that CyberLink would take my suggestions to heart, I would be happy to submit suggestions officially. But it seems pretty clear that new features are a lot more common than fixing long-standing issues. This post from almost four years ago about an issue that still exists today seems to illustrate that very well. If anyone knows how to get suggestions to someone who actually cares, please let me know. --
