Work Flow for Audio Clips

I am putting together various videos consisting of my old home movies (some from 60 years ago). They currently have no sound track, as the old 8 mm cameras were silent. My problem is to add a sound track from a commentary recording that my family recently made as we watched the home movies. Because of the video editing I have done, the audio recording cannot simply be laid in as a single unedited audio track.

The commentary is one long recording and needs to be chopped up into clips. Then the clips need to be placed at appropriate places on the PowerDirector audio timeline (which already has the video edited and locked in). My challenge is to figure out the best way to go about this.

In theory, I could do it in PowerDirector, but it seems cumbersome and fraught with danger of messing up the video portion (though perhaps "locking" the various video tracks would solve that part of the problem). So, I have gone to AudioDirector, placing timeline markers throughout the audio file to demarcate the the beginnings and ends of the desired audio clips.

But here I am stuck. I can't figure out a good way of extracting the clips and then porting them over as clips into PowerDirector. ("Copy" works on a clip, but, subsequently, PowerDirector won't let me "Paste" the clip onto its timeline. Also, AudioDirector doesn't seem to have a convenient option for creating clips from successive timeline markers. (Why not? Shouldn't there be a global "Create a Bunch of Files named from the Timeline Markers" command?))

So, here is my question: What is the best approach to use in extracting clips from an audio file and then making them available to PowerDirector and a PowerDirector project?

Any thoughts on this problem would be much appreciated!

Hello Roger,

Welcome to the ADR forum.

I don't think there's one single workflow that works best in all situations. When I'm doing a project like yours, where the audio snippets need to be timed to an already developed video, I generally follow this sort of procedure.

1. Audio clips are imported into PDR then split and aligned with the appropriate section of the video
2. The audio section (interviews, voiceovers etc) is produced (in PDR) in an audio only format
3. That produced file (already syched with the video) is edited & adjusted in ADR
4. The reworked audio in re-inserted in the PDR project
- then the music bed is added and the audio mix done, often right in PDR.

That's only one way to go about it. In this case it's my preference because it's a visual way of synching everything. Other members may chime in with their preferred workflow.

To avoid "messing up" anything in your PDR project, just lock all the tracks (except the audio track you're using) so they cannot be changed
