Pressing the comma (,) will jump back. How far back depends upon your SEEK button setting.

My problem is the following : I am shooting family films. There is a lot to be edited and I am moving froward and backwards every time to find the best cut/split point. If I am not able to simply backward as I am doing forward; this is nonsense. All the programs I have tried allows you to move in your film anyway you want. When I look at the screen shot you, I must admit I am very concerned as the double arrows moving right (fast forward has no identical icon for reverse. Again, I must admit I do not understand the concept of not being able to one action in one direction and not the same action in the other direction. What would users say if you could only slow down your clip and accelerate it.
I am sure you have the answer, so please help ma. I cannot use the software as it.

Sorry, but other than <ctrl-left arrow>, to jump to the head of the previous clip, and the comma approach already mentioned there's no Fast Reverse that I can spot in the interface.

Powerdirector offers Fast Forward in steps. It does not have on the preview interface a Fast Reverse.

The two single arrows are step forward or step back one frame per click.
borgus1 has given you a keyboard shortcut and a picture.

You can type time in the time notation (clock) and jump to that time, to any time on the timeline forward or backward.
You can of course drag the scrubber to any point on the timeline forward or backward, How smooth that works, depends on how much you have the timeline stretched out.

The Space Bar is Pause and resume play (it is a toggle).
Clicking the play button on the preview, is the same as space bar.

Do not use stop unless you want to jump to the beginning of a Clip or Movie, depends on preview mode (Clip/Movie).

I use only the space bar and the mouse. For the life of me I cannot see how the function you want is a deal-breaker. An annoyance, OK, sure. Many folks here use keyboard shortcuts, so perhaps I am in the minority. But, I think you'll miss out on a great software and a superb forum of volunteers if you run away too abruptly. A great thanks to all, although Barry my level in English does not allow me to exactly understand the meaning ( or the underlined meaning) of your post.
I have decided to go PowerDirector, but having used Premiere and Vegas for years, I still have reflex that I need to change. Carl, I will use all the methods you and Borgus suggest and try to find mine. I guess an mix between the mouse and second by second step could be a good choice.
