Problem uploading 8 and Hi8 videos into Power Director 7
[Post New]
Facts and my problem:

I am a new user of Cyberlinks Power Director V7

Computer has a 3 gig dual Processor, 2 gig memory, 500 gig sata hard drive. WinXP SP3

My camera is a Sony DCR-TRV315 Digital 8 video camera with firewire output.

Power Director V7 installed fully with no issues.

My Video camera is IDed by computer and Power Director and I have 100% camera control by the software.

I have already uploaded a few video and have saved them in mpg format on hard drive for future plans to burn onto DVD.

Here is my problem.
I tried to upload some of my older 8 and Hi8 tapes which view on my camera and on my TV using this camera.
When I try to play or record them to my PC and Power Director this is what happens
Able to start video and play for approx. 5 seconds and the tape stops and the software asks if I want to save the 5 second clip.

I can hit PLAY then FF you can view the video within Power Director screen in fast forward mode with no problem. When I stop and hit play or record it will play for 5 seconds and stop again and ask if I want to save the 5 second clip.

With the information above what do you think the issue is?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

John,
I'm trying to evaluate PD7 for purchase and I have the same issue you report. I'm using a Sony TRV-480 which is a Digital8 camera capable of playing the 8 and HI8 formats. Of course I got the camera for the purpose of converting old analog tapes so mine are all HI8. When I try to capture I get 6 seconds and that's it. With MovieMaker2 the capture runs flawlessly for 2 hours and delivers a good quality DV-AVI with a file size of 26GB. I was hoping to use PD7 so I could capture directly to MPEG-2 and then compare quality. Under the Device Manager my camera is reported as Device Instance ID: AVC\SONY&DV-VCR&CAMCORDER&DV\EC7260301460008
Hardware ID: AVC\Sony&DV-VCR&CAMCORDER&DV

I'm pretty confident that our cameras are not properly recognized by PD7. I probably won't purchase PD7 if this isn't fixed.

I found a work around for the moment.
I used Windows Movie Maker that was installed with my WinXP.
It was able to upload into a avi file then I was able to pull it into PD7 and modify for a final burn DVD. Really worked well.

Dafydd, What are your findings on this? Can our HI8 cameras be properly supported in PD7?

I have an older Sony Cam, it's analog and PD won't work with it. I use my Canon Elura 100 as a pass-thru, capture with Movie Maker, and go on from there.
My experience tells me that good videomaking is a multi-program job.

Capture programs, sound editing programs, conversion programs, etc.

PowerDirector is where the rubber meets the road.

I'm told the Hi8 hasn't been tested on PD7.

RCA or S Video are the alternative capture method. Best info I can get for you.
