Need help with Voice Over Feature

Can someone explain to me how to use the voice-over feature so that I can hear it? Although I've used PD for quite a while, I've not used the voice-over feature yet.

I have PD7 and a USB standard microphone. I thought I had it set up correctly, but no matter how loud I speak, I can barely hear myself speaking. When I add background music (and lower the background music volume), it is even worse.

This is how I set it up:
- clicked on voice-over
- selected device and moved slider to highest volume input
- clicked on profile and the default was "untitled" but gave me choices of CD, Radio, Telephone quality along with their default attribute settings.

This is where I'm getting confused because I don't know what all the kHz, bit rate, stereo choices mean . . . . I tried experimenting with different attributes, but still can barely hear the voice over recording.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Cindy

Hi Cindy,

I would explain how to use it (I chose CD quality and you seem to be making the right choices.) ..... but this particular feature has a problem. I have been mentioning it needed correcting for some time. Beta testers reported a problem. Basically dreadful feedback - of your own voice. We are hopeful the update out at the end of this month will include a corrective measure.

Lately, I have found a workaround of using an audio editor to record the voice over while the video is played in the PD time-line. as you are a member already: http://seemyworldonvideo.com/pages/extras.html

Dafydd,

Thanks for the help - I may experiment with the editor, but look forward to any improvements at the end of the month.

Maybe, I'll set it to CD quality for now, turn up the volume and "practice".

I had the same problem in PD 6. Eventually removed the usb mike and installed a normal mike. Problem solved!

Ran a test on PD7 this morning. No Problem! USB must also be unplugged from comp.

Hi Chris,

Which issue Chris?

Cindy's or the one I mentioned.

I'm not using a USB on this one.

Further info--when I click on profile in VO it does not give me the choice as mentioned by Cindy. (Radio, Telephone or CD)I get quite a long list of audio qualities to choose from, starting at 8.000 Khz 8 bit mono. Which setting should I choose for CD Quality?

In the profile setup my format is listed as PCM.
