CyberLink PowerDirector 12 Empowers Consumer Creation in Ultra-HD 4K Video With New Support of XAVC S Format

The multimedia software leader provides users with the most comprehensive Ultra-HD 4K video production experience in a powerful, intuitive package

Taipei, Taiwan—January 29, 2013—CyberLink Corp. (5203.TW), a provider of innovative media creativity solutions, today announced that its multi-awarded video editing software, PowerDirector 12, now empowers consumers with an end-to-end solution to create and produce Ultra-HD 4K content, through its support of the XAVC S format.

Ultra-HD 4K is the industry standard for ultra-high definition and is increasingly featured on televisions, and now, camcorders, and was prominently featured as a flagship technology at the recently-completed Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

With the emergence of Sony high-definition camcorders in the consumer market, the Sony XAVC S video format has been widely adopted by video enthusiasts. To ensure users have the most comprehensive Ultra-HD 4K video editing experience, CyberLink PowerDirector 12 now provides full compatibility of XAVC S video format support.

Chang, CEO of CyberLink. “With this, PowerDirector 12 users can now create and produce video content at a whole new level of quality and realism.”

CyberLink PowerDirector 12 takes full advantage of XAVC S format support for 4K video production. With XAVC S format support, PowerDirector supports video clips with maximum resolution of 4K (3,840 x 2,160), with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression, up to 60 frames per second, and up to 150Mbps. The XAVC S format support is now available for our existing PowerDirector 12 users via this free update. New customers who are interested in end-to-end 4K video editing can also purchase the latest version of PowerDirector 12 from the CyberLink online store.

The FDR-AX100 will most likely be my next camcorder so might want to be familiar with the codec. It seems to be not on my PD12 version, at least I cannot locate it. Unless it is under a different name. It should be H265.

Barry, as you mentioned, we more than likely already have these codecs ( or a variation ) installed except that they are not identified.

BTW, the announcement is dated Jan. 2013, however the text indicates that it has to be 2014. PD12 did not exist then nor did Sony have a consumer camcorder in Jan 2013.

I use the latest version PD12 ver2420 and all those 4K codecs have been in there for quite a while, all limited to 50Mb and I think not XAVC S.

I posted the question on their Facebook page.
"Support for" may not be the same as ability to output the same.
I am guessing it's the same as FLV, you can bring it into PD, but not output to the exact same format.
What about using an actual X AVC-S clip and seeing what SVRT can pull from it? Until we get an answer... HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Hi,
I don't know if this is what you are looking for but anyway here is a screen grab. I downloaded a Jellyfish MKV sample video at 120 MPS and brought into PD12 Ultimate then produced a 4K Ultra video

Jim
p.s. The finished production is kinda large to post.

Thanks all around. I was looking for the new codec and we will get it at one point.Using 4K material today I tried again to play some of the existing 4K codecs via USB stick on a Sony and Samsung TV and as in the past ,no go.

Hi Eugene -

In the interests of learning, I'm quite happy to show my ignorance on this one.

My understanding of it is that XAVC-S is in an MPEG-4 container.

I tried to download a sample clip from the Sony FDR-AX100 (Vimeo) but after waiting for the 450MB download to complete, it couldn't be saved. That was the end of that test!

You'll see CL's logo on some of these links "supporting" XAVC & XAVC-S. Perhaps they can shed some light...

From http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542376

(Noirist) XAVC-S is just a wrapper. On the FDR-AX1, it uses the same old h.264 4:2:0 codec as every other consumer camcorder, albeit at higher bit rates.

Good morning Tony

I have a copy of the FDR-AX100 demo tape it looks good but may be useless, camcorderinfo indicates a bitrate of 14.5Mb.
There is very little motion in that clip so it might be correct. The length is 2.25 minutes and 235MB.

If my math is correct and it is a BIG IF,235 MB boils down to about 13.5 Mb average, so it looks in the ball park.

There is a a program, 4K downloader available, it works very well.

The reason for wanting the XAVC S is its high, up to 150Mb data rate, I wanted to see if my system can handle that, even though the camera is unlikely to exceed 50Mb since class 10 SDHC cards are used.
As you point out, the only difference being the bit rate.

And thanks for the extra material, very interesting reading.
