Cleaning up the downloads folder

I am doing my yearly routine maintenance on my computer. Since the PC is quite new one of the only things I really have to do is clean up the downloads folder. It contains 99% things I've downloaded for Cyberlink.
They included:

  • New fonts from the net
    particles
    pips
    titles etc all from cyberlink
    photos from the net
    music from the net
  • etc

and I'm a bit confused as to what I can delete from the downloads folder and what I can't.
I trialled deleting fonts, they seem to be ok to delete since they are installed already?
The music is in my Music folder, so that should be ok to delete right?
what about all the particles etc from Cyberlink DirectorZone. What happens if I delete those? I'm not sure how to test it withouta lot of trouble.

    thanks, for any help.

If at all possible, I would burn them to a disc. You have a backup, and if you find that you do need something, you still have it. Best guess is that you should be able to delete it all. Wait for other opinions before you do, though. __________________________________

An imaging utility can also serve this purpose, allowing for individual file restoration in addition to a full system back up of everything on the partition.

If you have a Western Digital hard drive, Acronis Tru-Image - a popular choice - may be free. Do not go this route if PCs are a mystery to you.

    Hi Jenny -

When you download things from DirectorZone, they arrive in formats like .dzp, .dzm etc for installation. Once you've installed the particles, titles, menus etc you can delete the installers (.dzp etc) unless you have a particular need to keep them. In this way they're much like fonts.

Update patches from CL? I'd transfer those to a back-up folder.

Music, photos etc from the net - if they're backed up elsewhere on your PC or external drives you can delete those. If not, back up as suggested above (unless you don't need it any more).

The backup suggestions made by borgus and jaimesque will be important if you ever need to do a clean system install.

    Cheers - Tony
