No sounds after playing DVD

I have no sounds after playing any DVD. I have sound before I open PowerDVD and the audio from the movie is ok. When I close PowerDVD, there is no sounds of any kind. I have to reboot to get my sounds back. What is going on? Is this another quirk involving Windows 8.1?

What file format is this if I may ask? Try an update on your sound card and see if that would help you out.

It cleared up after an PowerDVD 13 update came down. But it was music as well as system sounds. It was as if I had simply turned off the speakers.
