Slow timeline

Hi,

I have had this problem for a long time now, maybe since i first tried PD from version 9 and now i decided to try PD 12 to see if the problem was fixed and still the same thing.

When i add my m2t files to the timeline and then try to preview them it gets really slow and choppy, it sometimes works ok but when i start to do big jumps between the timeline or try to skip to different areas fast it gets really bad and lags for maybe 10-20seconds then starts to play ok again, even when i just press the play button it sometimes will start to lag and freeze for a couple seconds.

I have a decent computer and both PD and video file are on a SSD. I also have the shadow file enabled in PD and still same problem. Is there something i could try that could maybe make it more smooth when trying to edit in the timeline?

My specs are below

Windows 7 64bit
i7-3930k
8gb ram
GeForce GTX 580
160gb SSD that PD and video file are on

Video details

Video: MPEG2 Video 1440x1080 (16:9) 29.97fps 25000kbps [Video - MPEG2, Main Profile, High1440 Level, 1440x1080, 29.970 fps, 25.00 mbit/s (0810,e0,00)]
Audio: MPEG Audio 48000Hz stereo 384kbps [Audio - MPEG1 - Layer 2, 48.0 kHz, 2 chn, 384.0 kbit/s (0814,c0,00)]

Thanks!

Hi
For your system you shouldn't need shadow edit files - I'd like a diagnostic of your PC please, see guide Part A & B: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/29701.page

Have you applied the latest beta patch? see thread: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/30914.page Your issue may be resolved by applying the beta patch.

If you have Preview set to HD etc, your display may be slow and stuttering.

After you've applied the latest beta patch - tell us how you got on.

Hi Dafydd,

I have disabled shadow files and updated to the latest beta version. I believe it is working better now, but there is still a 5 second lag when i am jumping through the timeline. It even lags when i try to preview the area that i joined with the fade effect, like it will get stuck for a few seconds, i'll then move it back to preview the same area and might have to do this 3-4 times before i can actually see how the fade between the 2 clips look without any lag.

I have attached the DxDiag file.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Karaarslan,
Looking over your Hard Drives, the lack of spare capacity in the drives is a major factor contributing to your problem in my view.

Free up a significant amount of space in C E F G H & J - all are full or near full. I couldn't see a 160GB SSD in amongst the group.

Dafydd

Do you mean i should free space on the drive with PD installed? I don't think freeing space on all the other drives will make much difference, also C and J are both SSD, not sure why it isn't showing up that way.

Hi Karaarslan,
Spare capacity on "full" drives. I have always worked on the principal of having 10% (variable and about figure) spare capacity on HDD drives, especially where I store video data. Granted this may be a lot of "spare" but I don't run into problems when calling up data for PDR etc.

You have two small SSD (you state C & J), some of the early ones did have speed, read write issues and this according to what I've read/heard got worse as they were used a lot. The more recent SSD are a better option and have faster data transfer rates.

With your current set up I would expect a slower rate of data transfer (with zip spare capacity). The issue described fits what would be experienced with slow data transfer, graphic card struggling (and I don't think it's that).

Carry out the changes and see what happens.
