Given my Canon or Nikon limitation I think the only option is the D5300 as I don't think Canon make anything that shoots 1080/50p for some odd reason in their DSLRs.

Since you can't change her mind on brands, would she be open to a camcorder that also takes great pictures?

i own an older Nikon D80 with many lenses that now sits in a drawer because of the GOOD 20mp 10X (not great) quality of my Sony 3D camcorder. Remember to factor in the cost of at least a couple of lenses.

Camcorders are lighter and easier to carry if she is going to carry it around.

Canon has some very good camcorders. If you are in the US check out B and H they have good products and a large selection. Also look at the used department for 9+ quality used equipment. I got the Sony in the used department and paid much less than the new. I couldn't tell it was used. Sorry for the commercial ! I don;t know if it is legal on these forums. .

Well good she is getting into DSLRs (as long it's not one of those trendy fads like yeah Beats- every time I see those products I want to reach for a hammer for some odd reason.) Don't forget to get extra batteries, memory cards and a good tripod. I like the look of th newer model of the Manfrotto 190 along with a quick release head. My wife has also professed the "need" for a DSLR-like camera for Christmas .. sigh. So we have "discussed" the need for something travel worthy that she can take anywhere, pack in a purse and it must have a view finder whether OVF or EVF. She used to do portrait photography but she doesn't want the bulk and hassles / expenses of interchangeable lenses. So I suggested the Nikon P7800 as a pro-sumer light travel camera. *fingers crossed*

I used to be a die hard camera guy, but now I have switched over and agree with Steve above - some really good ones out now that can shoot RAW still images (plus 4K video... I am also keeping an eye out for 120fps capability too.) But that can also get really expensive and your daughter might object to it... unless dad lends her one of his camcorders to play with. You know the really good expensive one no one else is allowed to touch.

.. Just don't mention Google Glass to her.

Yeah but all of a sudden she seems to "neeeeed one" less if it is at the expense of Christmas pressies and that her existing Pentax may be OK for a while yet!

OK - So my daughter is a proud owner of the Nikon D5300 with 1080 50/60p video support. Here are my "quick" (10min) impressions of it's Movie Recoding capabilities (as I could not pry it out of her hands for any longer):
- Uses a MOV container containing an AVC (High Level 4.2 CABAC / 2 Ref Frames) for Video and 2CH 1,536, 48KHz, 16 Bit PCM for Audio (all pretty standard except for the MOV container, I would have thought they would use a M2TS derivitave but it does not matter).
- Has 2 video quality settings on 1080 50/60p mode, "High" = 35-37 and "Normal" = 20-23 Mbps
- Limited to 4GB file size per clip (so about 10min on "High" or 20min "Normal")
- The manual says "...the built-in microphone may record lens noise during autofocus and vibration reduction".... Worse than that it clearly picks up noise from just zooming.
- I've not tested the Vibration Reduction but with it off you clearly see camera shake
- Can not use the Flash as a video light.

Overall, The quality of the footage looks pretty good to me, nice and sharp, plenty of details with no visible artefacts (but I've only had a quick look at some footage shot at night). No problems with importing the files into PD.

Conclusion: By a camcorder if you mainly want to shoot video!

DSLR is not an easy tool for shooting daily life video, manual focus kills most of users.

You also need to invest gears like mic, rig, monopod, steadicam, etc. if you are going to shoot seriously. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
