Keeps closing when objects are placed on timeline

I have tried support and carried out their suggestions with no improvement. Have the latest drivers for Video(GTX 680), sound (no sound card installed) using the latest version of PD12, Quick time is also up to date. Have an i7 unlocked, 64GB memory, 500GB Samsung 8 SSD drive with 2 other Red 3tb drives so the PC is pretty up to date on Windows 8 operating system.

Only started having the problem after the latest round of Windows updates - that might not be connected as I have only had 12 for s short period of time.

Quite simply every time I place an object (sound or video) on to the timeline the programme simply closes.

Anyone else having this problem or can think of something that might be causing it. Support is working on it but just putting it out there if anyone has experienced this problem and found a solution.

Thanks. : Thanks, George

I don't have an answer for you unfortunately, but this does does give me an idea for these sorts of issues (especially if they are not random and can be re-produced): The ability to put the program in "verbose error-logging" mode, where every move by the user and the program is recorded as it happens to a log file, to help pin down where the issue is coming from (Is it a lack of system resources [memory, drive space, etc], user-error, or a bug/crash?)

That sounds like a very useful bit of software/tool for this type of error.

I have 100GB of free memory on my SSD + 128GB virtual on SSD as well.

It's probably software clash more than hardware I would have thought - but presume the crash logs will assist those in support. No error messages the programme simply closes - very quickly! Thanks, George

Yeah, I've only had one or two crashes so far personally (both under PD11 - during DVD rendering), and the program detected it had crashed and opened up the 'send crash report' window.
A detailed logging report might help figure out what exactly is causing the problem/crash - And it's quite possible that it's something outside of the program, like incompatible hardware, OS issues, etc.
I have 32GB of RAM on my system, so it's unlikely, though not impossible, when these things happen that it's a lack of memory. Your 100GB of free memory, although with an SSD drive it actually is memory, is not seen by the system as memory but as storage space. The 128GB of virtual memory on the SSD is also seen by your system (on the lowest level) as storage space, not memory, although it's emulating memory. So, it's memory, acting as storage, emulating memory! Whew!
Hmm... I was just thinking: I wonder if that is a possible cause of your problem? Have you tried turning virtual memory off to see if the problem still exists?

georgemon,
for something as radical an issue as you have, would booting up in SAFE MODE and doing some testing be a route to take? HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
Nvidia GTX 960(4GB)/16GB DDR3/
Canon Vixia HV30/HF-M40/HF-M41/HF-G20/Olympus E-PL5.

Only problem I am having is with PD 12. Support suggested that I created a dump file from Task Manager for PD 12 ( r/click create dump file). That crashed my machine completely and even reset my BIOS to its basic state. That was fun getting all the drives reset and finding I could not burn discs as Win 8 was now seeing my Bluray burners as "CD Discs". That was fairly easily sorted in the BIOS - but baffled me until I looked at the system manager.

However, PD12 now works! It does have the odd hiccup but at least I can complete my DVD creations and edit files/videos.

It would appear to be a software clash - not figured out what with yet, but if PD12 runs alone, it operates fine. Been trying software like IE 10, Mailwasher, Outlook - so far not found - but still looking.

Will let you know if I get anywhere. Thanks, George

I'm guessing that PD12 is Windows 8 approved, but I've heard other people having problems with it ( Win 8 ) even though their software worked fine under the previous OS. This is what happened to a lot of Windows Vista users, as well - One of the reasons it was not well received.

Anyway, I hope you have luck finding out where/what the problem is.

Russell
