Need Full Screen Video Capture Recommendation

Can anyone recommend a good video capture software application for capturing game play? I have been using Fraps for years, but just recently it has stopped working. So I need something else for doing my full screen video captures of game play.

I was hoping that PD12 would add something under the Capture tab, but no.

About the best screen capture software for Windows is Camtasia Studio for Windows.
There is a free trial to try, the license is expensive, about $300.

Tech Smith has other screen capture software that is less expensive.

I have two screen capture programs on my Computer.

Both are paid versions. Each was about $40.
ScreenVirtuoso Pro and Debut Professional. Both do a good job of screen capture, but configuration is important, it takes trial and error to find settings that work well.

Screenvirtuoso is now available for free. There is a free trial for Debut.

ScreenVirtuoso Pro captured files must be converted to use on Windows 7 64 bit. There is a build in converter that makes that job easy.

Debut Professional can make MP4 (default is AVI) files that work well on Windows 7 64bit.

I am adding Bandicam to this mix: http://www.bandicam.com/

I have tried a lot and they bog down the CPU when recording things on screen. Bandicam was a lot less CPU hungry. (Look out for this with any prgms you try.) Bandicam has various video output, supports nVidia & Intel graphics card h.264 encoder acceleration, has FPS (frames per second) screen overlay, image capture to png etc. around $40 license. Free to try.

Good luck with the search.

Rob

I use O-Cam, I even link to it on my site. I have also used the screen-cap built into YouCam.
FRAPS has a long history on these forums of being a bad playmate.

Thanks all!

Windows Update giveth and Windows Update taketh away.

I now believe that I lost the use of Fraps after a Windows Update, and last night another Windows Update restored it to usability. Love Microsoft.

A free/open-source screen capture software I recommend would be CamStudio for Windows.

I've used the free CamStudio app for years and like it very much.

CyberLink also has a product called YouCam that can record your screen activity. However, it does not contain the feature to highlight where the cursor is located like CamStudio has--at least I couldn't find out how to do this. Having a highlight/emphasis on the cursor/arrow helps the view to keep up with what's going on, especially with how-to and tutorial videos.

If YouCam does have this valuable feature, could someone please let me know how to use it?

- GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition (two of these)
- Kodak Zx5 HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera
- Canon PowerShot SD1300 (HD video & stills
- Canon EOS 40D DSLR w/lots of lenses--my favorite being a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Youcam does not have this feature, a shame. I suggest a friendly nudge on the Cyberlink Facebook page.

The screen capture facility of YouCam is a secondary feature to its main purpose, & I have found it to be left wanting.

Camtasia Studio is my "go-to" capture software but, even though it does a superb job, it is a bit of a resource hog (Rob's point above).

As Barry said, FRAPS can be troublesome when it gets to the editing in PD phase - but it's fine if you make sure the audio/video capture settings are in the "normal" range. PD, for example, doesn't like FRAPS' multi-channel audio but stereo is fine.

There's a mountain of freebies available & a few have been mentioned here.

Cheers - Tony

Have you tried HyperCam?

They made it free a while back and it works with many codecs and is simple and easy to use. It works quite nicely and can record audio as well.
