Moving text or image to follow a video object
[Post New]
I am putting together a “dash cam clips” video of crazy things drivers do, that I happen to capture on my drives. I am looking for a way to add text, or an image overlay (like a png of an arrow, or whatever) and be able to move it in the frame to follow the vehicle of interest.

If I use the Title Editor and put text on the video, would I have to add it frame by frame and move it slightly each time? Also, with many clips in the video, I could see having up towards 60 to 75 custom titles clogging up my list as I add annotations.

Is it the same case for images? Paste it frame by frame moving it slightly each time? Please give me some advise on how to best accomplish my desired effect. Thanks all! -VoicesInMyHead

Hi -

Are you wanting to have the text and arrow/marker move together on the screen? or just the marker?

If you want them to move together, it's simpler to make the words & arrow/marker as a single graphic. Then you could set a motion path for it in PiP Designer.

In this tutorial, you'll see how to easily make a title as a graphic file in PD. Preferences should be set to .png. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOSTXFTr1lk - the attached example was made right in PD.

If you were to also include an arrow/marker with the title before taking the snapshot, you'd be on the road.

This one http://www.youtube.com/user/PDtoots#p/u/7/4gPt7y6ipo0 shows the basics of setting motion using keyframes and this one gives more specifics about tracking an object to highlight it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxf5e6Ry9_o

Cheers - Tony

Thanks all! This will definitely move me along! I appreciate your time in responding!!

@Borgus1 and ynotfish: I now have the basics and the detailed examples for getting done exactly what I want. That last video link for tracking an object is perfect for what I want... I just didn't have the understanding to do a proper search on YouTube.

Thanks again!

Hey when you are done the video I'd like to see it.
I have one with a woman on a cell phone crossing 4 lanes of traffic in front of me oblivious to the cars that have to slow down in order not to hit her.

I rolled my window down and yelled: "Get off the phone!" which startled her as I drove past. Not the best video clip, my camera wasn't mounted tightly so it was a bit too jumpy. But I get a laugh whenever I watch it.

Well here it is - Sorry it took so long... work just doesn't seem to understand I have a life!

I only used the key frames to move objects a couple of times. I had a hard time keeping the motion smooth. I know I'll get better with practice.

*Edit to imbed the video... Thx RobAC!

That was awesome! I didn't know about the stop light law at 00:58 and being able to take a U-turn at a light.
(6:20 was hilarious.. ha... oops I mean naughty Voices very naughty driver!)

btw- you can link directly to youtube videos using the "Youtube" tab in your your reply posts see here: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/28822.page

I use an older Contour ROAM. That Drift HD Ghost camera looks interesting. That remote must be very handy.

Very cool video- nice work. I cringe at some of those near misses- bad drivers are all over the planet- one of my pet peeves.
