Video Degradation - Please Help

I record using the full version of Fraps 3.5.99, at a set recording speed of 29.97 frames per second. I can only enter a recording speed of up to six characters, and I record at 1920x1080 (1080p). After I record something, I watch the video at the same resolution I record in, and it looks beautiful, like I am still playing the game I was recording. However, after I put it into Cyberlink I get a message saying that the frame rates are different so there may be some degradation of my video. Since I cannot enter the full number of 29.97002997 into Fraps since it only takes six characters, I cannot alter that with Fraps, but I was hoping that there was some way to lessen the degradation of my videos or change the set project FPS to 29.97 instead of 29.97002997 which is what it is currently set to. The MPEG-4 and AVCHD video formats seem to be the best, and I render my videos at 1080p, just as they were recorded in. When I watch the videos after rendering, they are okay, but are slightly degraded, which I really don't like. Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks,
Lukas

Welcome to the forum.
Fraps is a popular, but troublesome program, in as far as PD is concerned. I ask you to do a search here on the forum, and you'll get loads of hits and helpful information to help you create a file that PD will work with. All that being said, a Fraps user may wish to jump in here with additional info.
Good luck. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Hi Lukas -

Why not set FRAPS to record at 30 fps, and set the same in PD's preferences?

I just had FRAPS capture some video playback (1920x1080 .MOV @ 38MBps). Side by side in PD's preview and the produced file, it's hard to spot the difference.

Cheers - Tony

Frame rate variations will trigger a warning message in PDR11. This is only a warning and of no great consequence for an editor to ignore - the frame segmentation has to be approximate when one considers the varient. The electronic file is segmented into a close approximation to display in the track. It is the selected PRODUCED file which is of greater significance for the editor.

More experienced editors uncheck the warning/confirmation message in Preferences. Video screen capture programs can be erratic over their accuracy, recording at any selected frame rate! I have seen one program where 30 is selected but the program shows 15 while recording!

I'm not quite sure what you mean, because I don't know of a way to set it to exactly 30 fps in PD preferences. If you are talking about where it says NTSC (30 FPS), that is what I use, but I'm guessing it's just a rounded number because NTSC video is 29.97002997 fps. However, if you know a way that I can set it to use exactly 30 fps, than I would HUGELY appreciate it since that would ultimately solve my problem.

In regards to what Dafydd said, I think I will just continue editing like I am, seeing that the video degradation is not actually of huge significance. I just like to get things as perfect as possible in terms of a produced video in relation to a recorded one, so I was seeing if that is even possible.

Lastly, thank you all for replying to my message, I really do appreciate it

EDIT: I also wanted to ask a smaller question, so I will do it now. In PD General Preferences, there is a check box that says "Enable HD Video Processing (shadow file)" and I was wondering what that does specifically.
Thanks,
Lukas

Hi Lukas -

I'll allow more technically astute members to delve into frame rates and the difference between 30fps & 29.97...fps, and how to set your PD preferences. Anything I'd say would only add to the confusion & misinformation about frame rates.

Like many other forum members & PDusers, I have that confirmation unchecked. I know what I'm importing. We've had PD users get false alerts when inserting clips. As stated above, it's the produced file that matters.

If you have Shadow files enabled in Preferences, PD generates low res (720x480 MPEG-2) copies of your imported clips. This decreases the load on your PC during editing. In production, PD uses the original high res clips.

Again, most editors with capable PCs have the shadow files option disabled.

If you have shadow files enabled and your clip is in the timeline, the preview window is showing the low-res version (not the original). Obviously the quality of the image is decreased!

I've only ever used FRAPS to test other members' problems using FRAPS captures in PD, but it consistently records at the frame rate I set.

If your FRAPS settings closely match your production settings, you should get a good finished product.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks a bunch for the feedback. As I said, the video degradation isn't noticeable unless you watch the video in full 1080p so because of this I will just continue to edit with the frame rates matching up as close as possible. Also, thanks for explaining shadow files. I think I'll keep them unchecked seeing as my PC is fairly good.
