Has anyone tried PowerDVD 8 Ultra yet? Is it worth the upgrade? Will it play movies from the hardisk (VOB rips)?

Yes it will play VOB files - but so will older versions of PowerDVD.
DVD playback ok so far (only bought it 14 days ago)

Yes, you can play standard DVDs from the hard drive even with the latest versions of PowerDVD7 and PowerDVD8.

The removal of playback from the hard drive impacted HD-DVD for PowerDVD7 and BluRay for PowerDVD7 and PowerDVD8.
