DCP creation
[Post New]
A while back, I inquired if it was possible to generate a DCP from PD11. DCP is the abbreviation for Digital Cinema Package and is the standard delivery form for Digital theaters World-Wide.

The production is delivered to the theatre on a hard drive for display. If the production is very short, it can be delivered on a thumb drive.

I found a FREEWARE application called DVD-O-Matic which has allowed me to create a DCP and have had it projected on a 35' movie screen in a "FLAT" 1.85:1 format.

The video quality was the same as viewing it on a HDTV.

This opens up a whole new avenue for those wishing to publicly exhibit their work on something larger than a flat screen tv.

My workflow was full HD camera/PD11/Produce (custom profile) h.264AVC/1920X1080/24P/high profile/cabac/avg25000kbps/dolby 5.1/384kbps. The target directory, for the production I called "Productions". It can be any folder that you wish to create.

Most film festival entries that are selected for finalist screening, must be be submitted in a HDCAM tape or DCP format, some accept blue ray dvd's for selected screenings.

Cheers, Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Since your blurb doesn't help PowerDirector customers use PowerDirector 11, I am locking this thread -- in theory. Gateway DX4380, AMD A8-5500 Quad Core 3.2GHz with ATI Radeon HD 7560D; 16GB RAM; 1 TB SATA 7200 RPM; Windows 8 Pro 64-bit; PDR11, PDVD12.

Could be a good idea if it attracts another market segment to the product.
Given that there are apps that will make the DCP files from a variety of files produced by PD I wonder how useful it would be for existing users.

Hello, I was unaware that there were PD11 files that could be usable for DCP creation and NO ONE on this forum gave me any information regarding this subject when I posted my original inquiry.

That is why I researched this subject and posted my findings. If some people, on this forum, are upset by my post; I was just trying to be helpful.

I THOUGHT THAT'S WHAT FORUMS ARE FOR!

That being said, does anyone know the procedure for creating a HDCAM tape from PD11.

I reckon it's a valid suggestion but just that it probably belongs more in a suggestion box. Maybe someone from Cyberlink will pick it up from but you might get more if you contact directly as a suggestion. The forums are more peer based.

No experience from me with HDCAM tape but have noticed a HDV tape option in the Device tab in Produce.
If that doesn't help then maybe start a new thread with HDCAM in the title to grab someone's attention.

I believe it was just the wording of the question. We are not allowed to promote other products, but if you are trying to use PD to create a compatible video file, that is a valid request.

I found the information quite interesting and will look at the program later tonight to see what format might work. __________________________________

So far I have not been able to get it to accept any format without crashing, so I do not know what will work. Looks promising, otherwise. __________________________________

I believe the question has changed since the last time I read it, but on DCP production...

PowerDirector does not produce them. Might be a nice feature to add in a future release. After moving to my 64-bit system I had no trouble importing 1080 files in MPEG 2, MP4 and AVCHD. I only had a 480 video in AVI and that failed to import. I also imported MP4 files in 2k and 4k. The 2k video was the only one that I actually made a DCP from, but since the other formats did import, I assume they will complete the process. I did not try anything smaller than 1080, as that would likely cause quality problems on the big screen anyways.

I don't know if that helps you at all, but I did confirm that your process works using PD to edit and produce the movie to import into third party software. __________________________________

Hi! Oh God, there are indeed a lot of jerks around here, sorry to say that. I do exactly the same thing, so thank you for your post and your producing specs for the DCP source material, I'll try that. It's about time that PD addresses that as well (among many other things).

I'm totally on your side! ;

Thank you very much for posting this! It seems like film festivals are starting to require DCP formatted video files and without your post I would not have known how to convert our existing movie file using a combination of Power Director and the dcp converters. There are two free ones that I've discovered. The one you referenced is now called dcp-o-matic, and there's another one called opendcp.

The film festival has suggested we use a converting service (simpledcp), which would have charged us $320 just to convert a short 9 minute movie! yikes! I was able to do the same for free with powerdirector and dcp-o-matic. Wish that this feature were built in to power director (I'm running version 13), but at least it all works (fingers crossed).

Thanks again!
