Capture DV from analog camcorder through digital camcorder

I'm using Power Director 5 and trying to capture old analog video using an analog camcorder connected to a Sony digital camcorder and firewire to my PC. PD5 insists that I must have a video tape in my digital camcorder and will not permit me to capture. Anyone have any idea how this can be done? Cyberlink claims PD5 does not support a double connection. Believe it or not my old Windows Movie Maker works but will not permit me to create MP2 files. Is there an answer??

I use my Canon Elura 100 to transfer analog vhs and Hi8.
Movie Maker is what I use. It would be nice to use PD, but it won't work in this setup. I have simply accepted it and moved on. There are many free programs to capture the footage if MM won't. Join/SignUp to SeeMyWorldOnVideo. We're PowerDirector Video Editors. Are you a member? - JOIN TODAY!

Barry, thanks for the comments. I'm forced to use Windows Movie Maker to capture and create a WMV file. Then I use PD5 to produce an MPEG2 that I can then edit, create and burn. But I sure takes a long time with the extra steps. I wish Cyberlink would create a patch to capture directly from the double connection.
You mentioned many free programs?? Is there one that you found that would capture directly to MPEG2 format?

Try looking at CNET.com downloads.
Or Softpedia.com (join for free).
A search will show something. I'll look later also. Join/SignUp to SeeMyWorldOnVideo. We're PowerDirector Video Editors. Are you a member? - JOIN TODAY!

I could not find a FREE program that will capture to Mpeg2.
That's not to say they do not exist, I just didn't find one.
Why are you capturing to wmv? AVI is a better quality file, rather large also, but better.

I could not find a free copy either.
Do you think using Windows Movie Maker and capturing to AVI instead of WMV and then producing the AVI file to MPEG2 using PD5 would give me a better quality result? I haven't tried that as of yet. I'm not sure Cyberlink PD5 will convert AVI to MPEG2 or burn a movie from AVI.

YES, capture to avi, then in PD5 you can edit the avi or produce it to mpeg2, then edit.
You can create a dvd disc from both the avi and the mpeg.
Remember that the avi will be more demanding of your computer. Join/SignUp to SeeMyWorldOnVideo. We're PowerDirector Video Editors. Are you a member? - JOIN TODAY!
