camera shake: PD vs. Canon VIXIA

I tried out the camera shake smoother and its pretty good. With that in mind I wonder if I shouldn't stop using Canons in-camcorder image stabilization algorithms? They still have the physical kind but they say that is for when zoomed way in.

Opinions? Canon HFM301 (+wide angle lens)

Hello DnoyeB I have a Canon VIXIA and I have the image stabilization trun on. Now I will say I have not had the camera that long still learning it. I hope to get out with it today. I guess I look at it has if Canon stabilization works I want have to add it in PD 11. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

The Canon stabilization works but it can't compensate for the bounce of riding a bike. The Cyberlink compensation performs much better there. Canon HFM301 (+wide angle lens)

Unlike in camera stabilization, post stabilization can cost you 30% or more of your pixels, depending on shake amount.

I would only use it for individual scenes.

Sorry to intrude on this thread but it looks like a good place to ask regarding the HF G10...

I'm a DSLR kid and recently added a Canon HF G10 to my arsenal. While I have familiarized myself with the camera and it's plethora of available settings, I am beyond newbie status when it comes to post. I shoot in 24p MXP and while I can import fine, I always get an error message that this rate doesn't correspond to the selected TV Format (NTSC 30 FPS) -

For MXP 24p on the HF G10 what is the best course of action when selecting a Profile Quality in production? I've used SVRT, and tried all of the various formats within AVC H.264 and while it renders fine, the end result is mediocre. I blame operator error as I am a newbie with HDD Video and post so any help would be appreciated. I just want to be able to get the most out of a good camera, and after reading manuals, tutorials and watching how to videos, well I am still a tad lost.

I didn't install the supplied Canon transfer software as I was told that is unnecessary with PD11 and can slow the program down, so should I shoot in PF24 and go that route or is there a simple fix for 24p? Feel free to laugh, I deserve that. I'm just an analog kid trying to catch up and function in a digital world.

I have the Hf G10 and I get the same message to if I use the 24P settings. It is because in the set user preference there is no 24p setting. You can go in to the confirmations and uncheck aways prompt me when TV format conflicts.

I have used the h264 and MP4. I have never used SVRT I should try it oh. Plus when I produce I uncheck hardware GPU. I always produce to files on with the same setting it had when it came out of the camera and if I'm going to upload to the web I lower the bit rate down. I use mp4 for the web. This is the frist video I shot with it. I'm still learning the camera on what I can do in the manual mode.

Thanks!

I did that but wasn't sure if I was opening up a can of worms by ignoring that warning;

If I can pick your brain with one more question regarding p24...

What profile/quality to you recommend using during production? I would assume AVC 1920 x 1080/24p but I'm probably wrong. For now I just transfer finished clips back to a card for viewing and sharing. Forgive me for my ignorance, but the last time I worked with video it was recorded on those antique things known as VHS tapes, and I believe the most advanced we ever got was using analog "Dazzle" movie editor so I am starting over from scratch and realizing that I am comically lost.

Best,

Never use stabilization while on a tripod.
My M40-41 have 2 Stabilize option (other than OFF), one for just hand-held, and the other, more aggressive Dynamic for walking around.
In-camera is always best, preferably OPTICAL, rather than digital. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I don't mind the pixel loss. Looks way better than the jumpy camera...

FYI PF24 is actually 24p formatted as 60i. PD understands this though and can rework it into its proper 24p. 24p is good for digital mediums like computers and digital TVs. Might need to tell PD to use 24p instead of 60i or whatever its producing to. 60i is mainly analog TVs. Canon HFM301 (+wide angle lens)

I have forgone 24P, I feel 30P is the best compromise, although I have a shoot coming up that I WANT to look like video, so 60i it is. I'll be in-studio, so I must remember to shut off the STABIE! HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

It's always best to check your own model, but I think the STABIE rule is across-the-board. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

I read the video look was more from the aperture. Try PF30 with the "movie mode" or whatever its called on the canon. Canon HFM301 (+wide angle lens)
