Chalkboard Special Effect?

Hello!

This is my first time working with PowerDirector... I want to create either special effects or transitions between slides (I'm not sure which would be more effective) that make it look like various graphics/text/logos are being sketched onto a chalkboard background.
Here's an example that's similar to what I'm going for:
http://www.revostock.com/After-Effects-Project/32732/chalkboard.htm

I have a bunch of Photoshop images that look like chalkboard drawings ready to go. I also have a chalkboard "background" image that remains the same for each chalk graphic... I think all I need to do is find a way to transition between slides so that the graphics slowly show up on the background.

Is it possible to do this in PD? Does anyone have any ideas for how I could go about this?

Thanks!!!

Hi JackieZ -

Well - you'd be pushing PD a bit to achieve the same kind of effect, and there's certainly no instant template for PD like the one you linked...

BUT

PD does have the facility to draw on the screen in Paint Designer

Still, there'd be a lot of work in PiP Designer to get the same rotational transition as AE. If you were prepared to water down the idea a bit (!) you could get a series of chalkboards - with something like a soft wipe transition between each - with each chalkboard being written/drawn on.

The AE template is for displaying videos - is that what you're after? or do you want to write/draw on each chalkboard?

Cheers - Tony

JackieZ ,

The effects that you are looking at are more in the graphics design (animation) field. PD is an editor with a bit of standard effects. Win 10, i7

The main thing that I like about the example that I gave above is the way that the graphic/text within each "chalkboard section" wipes back and forth to appear.... (hope that makes sense!)
I'm just looking for a similar type of transition. Do you think the soft-swipe effect would work between slides? I don't need to draw anything in PD because I've already created the graphics in Photoshop.
Thanks for your help!

Thank you!

Oh - OK - that's much simpler than what I was thinking you wanted.

There are various "Wipe" type transitions that would work well in that situation.

The next question would be whether you wanted the transition to be applied (a) to the whole image or (b) just within the chalkboard frame (like in the AE template).

(a) is easy as. (b) takes a couple of extra steps.

Hi JakieZ,

As has already been stated above, applying the “sketched parts” of animating on a chalk board type of template, does require some extra work. And is not an automated process in PD, like it possibly may be in other editing programs.
Though choosing the Pop Up motion effect in Ttle designer when applied to a Chalk font, would provide a pseudo chalk typing effect. And certain fades and dissolves can so sometimes be effective.

For what it’s worth (though it may not be exactly what you’re looking for), here’s a short video (01:07) containing some short snippets, showing only those chalk board theme bits, that were included in a larger PowerDirector tutorial project.
Yes, there’s always room for refinements, if one is willing to take the time to do a bit more pre-production.

For most of the images, I just need to apply the transition to the whole image. However, there are two images where I would prefer to apply the transition to a section of the image... is that possible, too?
