When adding items to the timeline and then select a clip.
Every time I split any part of a clip and delete the part I don't need, the rest all moves to the left right next to the clipped piece.

I like to keep everything where it is and move items manually.
I checked the options but its not clear where in there I can disable this function.

Any help is appreciated.

The best method is to drag the clip to the end of your timeline, then delete.
Or...
create what many call a JUNK TRACK, an empty track where you can drag the offending file to and delete.
Also, in PREFERENCES you can disable the Link all tracks function.
In PD11, they gave us a new right-click menu for this. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

To me the easier way would be to choose "remove and leave gap" - or, using the keyboard, press shift-delete.
Then nothing is moved nowhere, when removing a no-longer-used clip.

Michael.

Yes, PD 10, is that the right-click menu, I think it is, my PDs are all blending together, was it v9 we needed the junk track? I like v11's new approach. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
