downmixed 5.1-channel audio off-balance

While reviewing footage from my camcorder on my computer using PowerDVD, I discovered an anomaly where the 5.1-channel soundtrack in the footage sounds like 1-channel (mono) from my speakers and seems off-balance (to the right). Using a downmixing method other than "Dolby surround compatible" on PowerDVD, it sounds like I'd expect. I have a portable blu-ray player which also lets me downmix to stereo rather than surround, with the same desired result.

I've also noticed this awkward audio when playing my footage through devices other than my computer and software other than PowerDVD, including a Playstation 3, a Bravia TV, and PowerDirector 10 as found in Media Suite 10 Ultra. Has anyone else encountered this? I don't mind downmixing 5.1-channel audio, but it's got to sound at least like stereo. There seems to be a problem in the downmixing done by the Dolby surround technique.

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965 running Windows 7 SP1 and equipped with 4 GB RAM, AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4500, Realtek HD audio, an HDMI port, and a 300 GB (billion-byte) SSD.

Sure thing. The video clip is from Sony's HDR-TD20V camcorder, an awesome piece of equipment by the way. It shows a horse, being described by a woman to my left (out of view). Her voice and my own should be heard more from the left. Please keep that in mind as you watch the clip so that you may detect this problem as I have, in which the our voices are louder from the right instead. If played through a 5.1-channel sound system, this problem does not occur.

I have played this clip not only on my computer, but also on a Playstation 3 connected via HDMI to a Sony XBR-model TV. The playstation was first set to pass the Dolby Digital-encoded audio to the TV for decoding and downmixing. Then I tried having the Playstation decode and downmix before sending it to the TV. Both approaches produced the same right-shifted, apparently mono audio. Lastly, I tried making a DVD with PowerDirector 10 HE3D. PowerDirector downmixed the audio during production, yielding the same undesired result on any player.

Have you updated the drivers for your audio device? The one you have is from 2009.

It sounds like there is an issue with the video when played on any device. Is that true? Is the real issue the capture of the video? What do you hear when you connect the camcorder directly to your TV?

Have you raised this issue with Sony? Are you using the internal mic or an external mic?

How long/large is the file you uploaded? I'm not sure how many people will even try to download a 267 mb file. Usually 5-10 seconds is enough to show us the problem.

I have been using the internal mic on the camcorder. The viewfinder also displays five meters showing the volume in each sound field (front left, center, front right, rear right, and rear left). So, for example, if I speak while behind the camcorder, the lower left meter representing the rear left channel reads higher than the others so I'm confident the mic is working properly.

On devices that offer alternatives to "surround" downmixing, the results are correct. both PowerDVD 12 and my portable blu-ray player, a Sony BDP-SX910, allow "stereo" downmixing, but PowerDirector 10, the TV and Playstation 3 don't. I presume they use the surround method.

I have the latest drivers offered by Toshiba for my audio hardware and will check Realtek's website for updates, but since this problem occurs outside of my computer and can be avoided by the means above, I doubt my drivers and hardware are to blame.

I uploaded an MTS file directly from the camcorder containing 1 minute, 20 seconds of video. It should be listed in my previous reply as being over 270,000 KB. Sorry about the large size. In addition to the devices and software I've mentioned above, it should also play on Windows Media Player on Windows 7, even on a 2D system. Let me know if you don't see it and I'll send something else for you to try.

Sharing this with Sony is my next stop.

I started to download that video but gave up. I have a fast internet connection and it was gfoing to take over a half hour. That is too much for 10-20 seconds of video. All we need is a couple of seconds. You can turn on the camera, shoot 10 seconds with you and someone else speaking and then post that.

So far I see that the dxdiag was downloaded twice (one by me) but no one is willing to download that longer video file. Perhaps someone will do that overnight when they are asleep. I will if you post a shorter version. .

Tomorrow, I'll find a place to record a 20-second clip and post it. I just need to find a place with localized sounds (i.e. people talking) that stand out from the background. That will make detecting this downmixing problem easier.

In the meantime, those who can, please try downloading the other clip overnight or while you're away.

Thanks you all very much.
