Bad results with wmv videos uploaded to the web. Reason? How to fix?

I made a video with clips from two other videos. Both of the originals are 16:9 and the new format file is set at 16:9. When I placed them in, I enlarged them to fill the screen, but that's it, nothing else. Did I miss something that needs to be done?

The reason I ask is because I saved the final video as a .wmv and the video played perfect, on my screen. But, when uploaded the video to the internet, it played with a black bar on the top and bottom of the player and the actual video was streatched out to fit the width of the player in the middle.

Is this because I used the two different videos and didn't "flatten" them? How can I fix this and have the video upload like it plays on my screen and fill the player?

I know I wrote my other question yesterday, but I was wrong and confused. I wanted to erase it because it, itself, is confusing, but I don't have that option, even though there's no response to it. I wish there was.

Anyway, I'm sorry about the other question and thanks for any help I can get.

Check your project ratio.

Director's Chair > Edit > Aspect Ratio > 16:9 or 4:3

If you have your project set to 4:3 a 16:9 video leaves black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

If you set the project to 16:9 then a 16:9 video will fit correctly.

A upload of a 4:3 project with a 16:9 video to Youtube will end up with black bars on the top and bottom and on both sides. (Window Box). The reason is because when you upload a 4:3 video, Youtube adds the bars on the side in their viewer.

Thanks, but that's what I can't figure out. The original videos that we shot are each 16:9 and the new file that I created is also set 16:9. I made sure that everything was set like that, but I'm still getting that wierd video when it's uploaded.

Any other ideas?

What service did you upload to?

The reason I ask, is because not all Video services support 16:9 video on their players.

What does the service specify for video uploads? What resolution, what aspect ratio, and what file format?

If Youtube, 16:9 is great.
I have several 16:9 HD videos on youtube.

Not YouTube, these videos are over 20 minutes long and we have an account with Brightcove. They have numorous video players. The one that I am using is the Widescreen with Vertical Video List.

If you'd like to see more information on the player, you can go to: http://support.brightcove.com/en/docs/player-templates

The main point is that if I save a file as a wmv, it plays fine, but uploads with flaws. If I save it as a H.264 and upload it, it plays fine and the ratio stays perfect. The only backfire is that the quality of the video goes down.

Brightcove recommends uploading H.264 or flash files, but the problem with that is the quality of the video goes down. When I upload a wmv file, Brightcove automatically converts the video to H.264, but the quality stays high.

Is there a way to "lock/flatten" the video's ratio? I just don't understand what causes the video to get streached out like that and not stay the same as the original videos. I have used wmv videos before and have not had this problem.

I do crop and spin one video -25 degrees. I then save it as a wmv video. I will then take the second video that is not resized, cropped or moved and combine the two videos. They are both in seperate tracks. Last, I do have a blank image to fill the background.

I honestly don't know if that's needed or not with PowerDirector10, but it seemed to be needed when using PowerDirector 8. The size of the background image is 16:9. Attached are PowerDirector 10 images of what I'm trying to explain, if it's confusing.

1. Background.jpeg - Blank background image that fills the main track.
2. Spin-Crop.jpg - Shows how the one video that is edited is twisted around and cropped.
3. Time-Clips.jpg - Shows how the final video is produced by timing the two different video with the audio.

When the 3rd part of this is done, I save the video as a mwv. I've tried saving it in different versions, but they all end up the same when uploaded. But, if I go back and save this same file as an H.264 and upload it. It plays fine.

note: When I do this and resave, I make sure thatthe main setting of the file is set at 16:9. Edit -> Aspect Ration -> 16:9

--- By the way --- As you may notice with the images that I attached, I finally went ahead and got the upgrade to version 10. I was upset and was hoping it would help, but guess what, my one problem is still occuring. The program will freexe in the middle of working on a video and I have to shut the program down and restar it. I got some instructions from CyberLink that I am going to do and hope it fixes the problem.

Thanks for your help,
Sean

Hi Sean,

This is just a guess.....

If your PD project is set to 16:9 and you are importing video clips that are also 16:9 aspect ratio, and you are then producing them to a WMV format that is not a 16:9 aspect ratio and are having troubles with the output not looking correct once uploaded to the website. It may be because the WMV profile you selected during the Produce section was not a 16:9 aspect ratio.

My guess is that you may not have produced them in a 16:9 WMV format?

Which WMV "Profile" did you select before you produced the file? Was it a 16:9 aspect ratio? 1920x1080?, 1280x720?

I could be wrong, but after reading your question I thought that this may have been a possible problem of why your videos:

I made a video with clips from two other videos. Both of the originals are 16:9 and the new format file is set at 16:9. When I placed them in, I enlarged them to fill the screen, but that's it, nothing else. Did I miss something that needs to be done?

Is this because I used the two different videos and didn't "flatten" them? How can I fix this and have the video upload like it plays on my screen and fill the player?

A+

Yes, I did have the videos saved correctly and everything else was correct, but when I went and saved them as a wmv, they saved in formats that were not set to play 16:9 videos, so when I watched them on my screen, I didn't really notice the blacks on the sides. When I saved them to the internet and had them play in a specific player that was set to play 16:9 videos, ...

Thank you very much. Now I know that when I go to save a video, in any format, I need to pay attention to the video size being created and the video size of what I have.

Thanks A Lot.
