No 30 day free upgrade policy?
[Post New]
I bought PowerDVD 11 Ultra on 1/22/12. I just found out that Cyberlink released PowerDVD 12 Ultra on 1/31/12. I didn't get any notification of the upgrade, so I learned of it just recently.

I wrote to Cyberlink to ask for my free upgrade, since they apparently have a free upgrade policy if someone buys a product within 30 days before a new version is released, but the most that Cyberlink will offer is a 50% discount on the upgrade.

I'm not sure what to do next. I've not had this problem with any other company. Even Adobe, the monster of a company that they are, gladly upgraded my software that I bought within the 30 day "post-update" window. Why wouldn't Cyberlink do the same? Are they that desperate for my $25?

I'm pretty disappointed with Cyberlink now. I was proud to have licensed PowerDVD before, but no longer. 1) I'm surprised that they offered you anything since you have been using the program for 9 months.
2) Did you look at the new version to see if there was anything in it that you would be willing to pay extra $$ for?
3) Look at Amazon to see what your version 11 is worth about $37.
4) Use this as a learning experience to check to new programs. Did you not sign up for e-mails from Cyberlink? .

Stevek, you're probably right. Had I signed up for the newsletters, I would have seen the new version release and wouldn't be in this situation.

Oh well. Thanks for replying, though. Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 on an Asus P8Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 / Intel Core i7 2600k@4.6gHz / 16gb G.Skill Ripjaws X Series DDR3 2133 / 9tb internal storage / Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256gb / Crucial M4 512gb x2 / Crucial M4 256gb x2 / WD Data Storage Drives

You're probably better off not having the 'upgrade'. Version 12 is rife with bugs. some were reported over 5 months ago and still have not been fixed. We were told there would be a patch in August and still nothing has appeared.
Version 12 as a blu-ray player is fine but as a multi format media player it is worse than version 11. I now use it solely for disc playback and use free players like VLC for other formats. Not what I expected to do when upgrading. Craig, thanks for pointing that out. I decided to try out my AnyDVD HD + VLC and AnyDVD HD + Windows Media Player setups. Both work fine. I had to install the Media Player Codec Pack, but both are nimble solutions for watching any of my movies.

Regarding the lack of bug fixes: I've never understood poor customer service. Customers are what keeps any organization running. Why wouldn't keeping them happy be a top priority?

BTW, saw your signature and noticed your setup is very similar to what I'm running... SSD prices have dropped quite a bit since I got my 128GB SSD. I think I ended up paying the same amount for each of the SSDs, strangely. The small is used for OS only, the large is used for Apps only, and the middle is for VMs only. The WD drives are for bulk storage and typical pack rat junk.

Don't get me wrong I'd like to use PowerDVD as my main player for all files, if it worked as intended it would be great as I like to stream to other rooms and handheld devices. Having just one player would make everything so much simpler.

Ha, yes we do have similar setups. Mine is mainly a gaming PC as you can probably tell from the SLI'd GPUs. I use my drives in the same way as you.
SSDs prices really have fallen since I bought my Force GT. I'm going to upgrade in the next few months and for the same price I paid for the 120GB Force GT I can get a 340GB Force GS Toggle NAND SSD!
I will also swap the 2 GTX 560s for a single GTX 680 with a view to adding a second later if needed (Doubtful as one should be enough)
Everything else is still great and more than enough for what I use this PC for. So glad I got the silver Arrow as it really is a beast of a cooler and so quiet.

Well, I got a response from CyberLink today, and they went ahead and upgraded me to v12 Ultra! After reading the stories on here, I think I'll do a backup before trying out v12, but I wanted to let you guys know how it turned out.

Craig, as for the Force GS, it's supposed to be a very fast drive. I'm still happy with my m4 drives though, since I was able to cut my 5+ minute boot times down to about 20 seconds. That's going from the "starting Windows" logo to having a working desktop and everything loaded. Best bang for the buck ever.

You might save some $ by getting a SanDisk Extreme 240gb. Hexus did a nice review of these drives lately, and the SanDisk very slightly exceeds the Force GS, but for fewer $.

Crucial Force GS 240gb on Amazon: $199.99
SanDisk Extreme 240gb on Amazon: $169.95

I also use a 256gb m4 in my laptop, since it's very prone to being dropped while at work, so the SSD has the potential to save me from a lot of grief. A coworker dropped his laptop (normal HDD) and lost everything. All you could hear was "click-click-click-click-click..."

I'm in the UK and here the Corsair GTs sell for roughly the same price as the Crucial M4s. The GSs are slightly more as they are Toggle NAND.

I also like the colour scheme of the Corsair series as they match my overall setup.

Hey guys,

We've strayed from the Cyberlink topic re: Upgrade to gaming. You can take this of line via private messages but the discussion should end here. .

Oh, so sorry, El Presidente.

His problem has been solved and we decided to chat about something else.

I take it interaction on these forums is Verboten? Just trying to lighten the mood while we wait for the fabled (due in August) big patch or even any little patch that would solve one of the many bugs.

Who put you in charge anyway?

Craig, looks like a cool system, only I have blue lights and you have red. Been nice chatting with you!

Stevek, I'm done here. Sorry about wandering off topic... you know how it is:

"You see dimensions in two
State your case with black or white
But when one little cross leads to shots, grit your teeth
You run for cover so discreet, why don't they..."
