Transitions changed in PD9.
In PD8 and earlier, transitions were a merged overlap between two videos with an equal distance/duration used in the overlap. A transition could be no greater than half the length of the shortest of two clips. Duration was limited but would cover an equal distance between two clips. The overlap of the transition shortened the display period of these clips by the overlap period used.
Since PD9 the transition has become a different tool, no longer restricted to the merged overlap, there is also a cross type behaviour transition. These two distinct types require more accurate placement and use. A transition between clips is not bound to be equal or restricted by the length of the shortest clip. An overlap shortens the video while a cross type doesn't. Duration of a transition is not defined equally on a variable placement item except in the default preference settings.
I set my transitions to one second and expand if I wish. I also use the Cross variant while others prefer Overlap, as the default choice.
I have got used to the way transitions work and use them. The PD8 and earlier method was very basic compared to today's transitions form.
Just my opinion.
Cranston has asked about the gap between your video clips. I would be interested to read your answer. Please provide a screenshot of the Edit Workspace - so we can see the tracks and the transition positions. Expand your tracks fully and examine the clip ends carefully.
