"Media Source Error" when putting an MP4 file into the timeline

Hi,

I have a problem with Panasonic Lumix FZ150 videos in MP4 640x480 format. I can import the files and play them in the library, but when i put them into the timeline the following error comes:

Media Source Error:
CyberLink PowerDirector could not construct the media source as a graph. This may be due to a lack of decoding filters for the file you are trying to edit.

After clicking away the error message the video file is placed into the timeline. When I try to play that video from the timeline then the same error message appears.

PD can process videos from the same camera in MP4 1280x720 format without that "Media Source Error" message. Both video files and dxdiag-statistics are attached.

Windows 7 Professional x64
K-Lite Codec Pack (full x32 version + x64 version)
QuickTime 7.7.2.
PowerdDirector 10.0.0.1703 (Trial)

This bug is a show-stopper for me to buy PowerDirector.
Any help is appreciated (before the last 10 days of the Trial-period are over).

Yuri

Both files play on my system. Asus i5 Win 7 Prof. 8gb RAM using Intel HD3000 default graphics. PD10 Ultra 1703.

There is one difference in the files (other than the AR) 792 uses AVC baseline 3.1 and 793 uses 3.0. MediaInfo files attached.

I have no answer as to why the trial version should not play them both properly.

Cheers
Adrian

I copied the files from the flash card to computer hard drive and afterwards imported them from the hard drive into PowerDirector.

Hi YuriM,

I am using PowerDirector 10 Ultra version 10.0.0.1703 64bit, I downloaded your clips as well and was able to import them into PowerDirector. The only difference for me was that I needed to change the clips from PAL to NTSC, 792 displays as 16:9 and 793 displays as 4:3.

Cyberlink does offer a 30-day refund if you should try the full paid version.

I have a similar problem. I too am using the trial version.

Win7 64bit
PD10 10.0.0.1703
Klite Codec Pack - Basic
Quicktime 7.7

File is imported from GoPro HD Hero2 set to NTSC (as is PD10) at 1920x1080.

File plays OK from media library window but not from timelime. Get same error message as you.

Downloaded your 2 files. Changed my PD 10 back to Pal. Can play both files from library but I get error message on BOTH files from timeline. I don't think this really is a codec issue as the files play OK in most media players (and can be played from the library window in PD10)

Not being funny but surely this should all be a bit more plug and play.....average home users are not going to even begin to try and work some of this stuff out.

Could it be related to the trial version??

I may have a workaround. I imported the same media but this time I enabled the shadow option AND let it finish generating the shadow file BEFORE dragging it to the timeline. I seem to be able to play it now without the error message. But I won't always want to work with a shadow file so this may not be permanent solution for me. Though I guess if this is a "feature" of the trial version then I may be OK if I purchase it. Only way to know is to buy it and test it in my own environment and use the 30 day refund if it still persists.....

In the interests of completeness I have retested with YuriM's files. I couldn't play either of them before. Now 792 plays OK as there is a shadow file generated. No shadow file is generated for 793 and I still can't play it. This means my workaround has limited benefits depending on format.

My workaround is limited to the point of being almost useless. Whilst I can now edit HD clips from my GoPro in the timeline I cannot produce them....It let's me get all the way to the end of the production process before it throws the same error. I have seen another thread which suggests there is an issue with the trial version of PD10 for H.264....So I guess I may have to bite the bullet and purchase it relying on the 30 day refund period if it still doesn't measure up.

That said....I have successfully worked with the files (.TOD) from my JVC Everio HD7. These files are Mpeg2 Full HD in a JVC specific container (I believe). I added transitions etc and then produced as Mpeg2 Full HD again. There was no perceivable loss of quality between the pre and post production video which I am really pleased with as I have seen some applications lose quality during the rendering process.

Edited to add clarity.

Hi Donski,

Reading your post it sounds exactly the same issue as I am having. Did you purchase the PD 10 and if so did the issue go away?

I am also using a gopro hero 2. Video format in HD MPEG 4.
I have been in contact with online support, but they just send through standard e-mails referring to my system. I have done their upgrades and still have the same error message come up. I have started to read the forum and the issue seems to come up quite a lot and no one has a real answer. If paying for the full version is the answer then why don't Cyberlink just say so. My first impressions of PD 10 is they don't seem to want to give you any real good support. I have played around with this system all day and really don't have the confidence that even if I purchase the full version my error messages will go away.

Would like to hear how you got on?

Many thanks

Keely

Hi,
The Media Source Error is a Trial version problem and one mentioned on the forum many times by users. Please search the forum. The issue has been mentioned to CyberLink

FULL VERSION:
There is a 30 day refund policy. It will at least give an added assurance and confidence to try out PD.

just to confirm, buying software clears up the problem. i had the problem on two computers, tried ffdshow, updating drivers.... on one computer the problem mysteriously went away, on the other it manifests itself a little differently but was still showing the same error message.

dafydd's , message above is the only one i saw suggesting it was a trail version issue. so i bought the software and it cleared up right away. was also getting some kernel error message that went away.

cyberlink needs to put this in their faq, or better yet, instead of an error message that sends users on a codec goose chase, popup a message indicating the trial version limitation.

I wonder how long the list would be to have them ALL?

Limitations
Watermark at the beginning of produced videos (5 seconds)
30-day working trial
An encoding limit of 50 iPod/PSP files (follows AAC's trial guidelines)
SmartSound Library trial version
Limited templates
Does not include the PhotoNow! program
Does not include the WaveEditor program
H.264 encode only on Windows 7 OS or specifc hardware

Truly mind boggling - why would a company offer a trial that doesn't work? If anything, I would think that would hurt the branding.

I want so much to get away from Roxio, although I don't have the time for a new learning curve. I fear the 30-days on a new purchase also wouldn't give me the time to truly evaluate, given my personal workload.
