I just noticed some odd behavior, and I don't know if it's been there all along or if it is something new to my setup.

I have been used to being able to move the scrubber back and forth and having the preview keep up. Now it doesn't seem to be able to do that.

Actually, what seems to be happening is that if I go to an area on the timeline where I haven't been before (not necessarily at the end, just some place where the scrubber hasn't been), there can be a four-five second delay before the preview catches up. If I'm sliding around a fairly small area, there is less of a problem.

Also, if I simply jump (by clicking on the time codes) then there isn't any delay; it only happens when I slide the scrubber.

I could understand this if I were working on a huge, HD 3D movie; but this happens with a 15 minute piece that I've put together that is 720x480. I've edited longer bits without noticing this issue.

I thought about manually cleaning out the temporary files (in the preferences area), and I noticed that there is a long list of files; and each one has an entry in a column labeled "shadow." I do not have shadow files turned on.

Before I start ripping my system apart looking for a problem, does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Hi Jerry

How odd

Are you sure the Enable HD video processing (shadow file) box is unticked - no tick in box.

Preferences > General > Enable HD video processing (shadow file)

Also try

Preferences > Editing > Enable continuous thumbnails on video clips for easy recognition is also unchecked.

And

Preferences > Project > uncheck Auto Save Project (remember to Save As regularly)

Good luck

Yes. I've never had it ticked, and I double-checked.

I've tried it with and without continuous thumbnails, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've also tried it with the preview at different resolutions, and that didn't help either.

I didn't try turning off autosave, but since it's set to 10 minute intervals it should only interfere once in a while. I'll try that, though.

One thing I did do that I need to work on is that I updated my NVIDIA drivers. I'll see if I can roll them back. Jerry Schwartz

Hi Jerry
I frequently search along the timeline for still pics from my videos and get lags of 5 seconds all the time....most annoying.
I wondered if it was due to lack of space on my 120gb C drive so got a 240 gb and it made no difference. (though I still love my ssd)
As it happens to me daily I would love to see a solution but im afraid nothing i have done has got rid of it.
good luck
David

I rolled back my NVIDIA drivers, and that didn't make any difference.

Maybe I just didn't notice this before, although that seems weird. Jerry Schwartz

Hi Jerry

That is odd.

I sometimes find that my set has some lag depending if you're in CLIP or MOVIE mode.

What is your Preview setting?

If it is set to a high resolution, try lowering the resolution is see if that reduces your lag.

Hi Jerry

What caught my eye was that you said "720 x 480" which shouldn't require much in the way
of PC resources at all, that seems really odd.

I normally work with 1920 x 1080 50p AVCHD and don't experience any such delay,
however MOV files do seem to make my system a bit laggy on the timeline.

Also when initially importing to the library AVCHD files just load in a flash while even
small mov files take several seconds. PD is a strange animal at times....

My video is 720x480 because it is a capture from VHS.

It doesn't seem to matter what the preview resolution is.

It also doesn't seem to matter whether I'm in clip mode or not.

I used "detect scenes" to chop up my original, and discovered that having one longish (but we're talking a minute or so) clip in the mix would cause, or at least make visible, the problem.

I then removed all of the scenes and tried splitting the original video into smallish chunks. With just a few of the chunks on the timeline, I had the same problem.

If I'm moving around within a small timeframe, the problem isn't there. That's why I suspect some kind of caching is going on.

I'm attaching the dxdiag files this time.

Jerrys,
With only 512 MB of Video memory does not help. You just have to take it slow.

I'm sure you're right. I'm constrained by two capacities: my power supply and my wallet.

I could swear that I didn't have this problem until recently, and I actually worked on this same video tape a year or so ago.

I have the whole thing packaged on disks, so I'll investigate that and see if the resolutions were the same. Jerry Schwartz

Well, I went back and looked at a previous capture from the same tape and had the same problem, so it isn't the video.

Either I was just more patient when I was younger, or the problem was introduced somewhere along the way. I probably was using either PD7 or PD8 back then, and of course my video drivers were older.

I think I'm going to surrender and just put up with the problem. Jerry Schwartz
