Trying to merge two projects using the tutorial here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGq_tL5F6Ug but I'm doing something wrong. When I click at upper right to minimize the first project, the whole screen containing PD 10 minimizes, of course. I can still open a second project by going to its pds file on the HD and clicking it. It opens in PD but the first project no longer appears. I get the message asking if I want to merge the two. I click yes. the second project opens and appears in the time line, but the first project has disappeared. Is there some additional step which I haven't seen?

What am I doing wrong? Bill Hansen

Open the first project.

In the first project you use the Orange range arrows on the timeline to select the entire project, (Drag the Right Orange Arrow to the end of your project). then press Copy above the timeline.

Without minimizing PD, Open the next project using the File > Open Project. Answer Yes to the merge library request.

When the second project loads in the timeline, Scrubber at Zero, Click the Paste button above the Timeline.

That will paste the first project in front of the currently open project (project 2).
Save a new project file with the combined projects.

Hi BillHansen,

The tutorial you referenced, was a workaround that applies to PD version 8 and 9.
The procedure shown is not necessary in PD10, as this feature has now been incorporated directly into PD10.

If you want to add a second project (via a saved .pds file), simply move your scrubber to the start or end of the current project in your timelines, then click on File at the top left of your screen. Then choose Insert Project from the menu, and simply browse for and open the .pds file for the project you want to add.

Carl and Cranston - The procedure Carl outlined works part way, but I'm still leaving something out or doing something incorrectly. By eliminating the minimization of PD, and ALSO choosing to save changes in the first project, the MTS files from the second project appear in the Library. Now I click to choose to combine the two projects. The MTS files from the second project appear in the Library, but none of the second project's edited files appear in the time line, and the second project's MTS files are all intermingled with those of the first project.

For example, in the project I'm trying to merge at the moment, in the Library there are MTS 00001(1), 00004(1), 00005(1) all from project #1. Next there's 00005 from project #2, 00006(1) from project #1, 00006 from project #2, 00007(1) from project #1 - and so on through all the files in both projects. Of course I could manually sort out the MTS files from project #2, bring them down to the time line one at a time in some order, re-edit each one (since the edited versions aren't in the time line) - but there must be an easier way.

I'm still missing something. What could it be? Bill Hansen

Maybe a video will help.

How to combine two projects. I used PD 9, it might work different in PD 10.

Hi Bill,

Carl’s “copy method”, as shown in his fine demonstration, does indeed also work on my end.
And the tutorial Neil linked to, also goes into detail.

But I still maintain that using the Insert Project option is the easiest method to combine, or add a separate project (from it’s .pds file), in PD10.
Well, it is for me anyway.

I can’t quite tell from your description, all the exact steps you are taking. Or what might be causing the issue.
But for what it’s worth, here’s a short video example (00:37), of adding a second project to your timelines, using the Insert Project option.

Okay - I'v'e got it now. The "Paste" notation wasn't included in the original tutorial (the one which was a workaround for an earlier version of PD). Both Carl's and Cranston's versions work perfectly. I messed up Cranston's version the first time I tried it (how can you mess up something so simple??? But it did) but it worked like a charm now. I'll use them both, since the Copy-Paste method puts the new project at the end of the first project, and the Insert method inserts the new project before the first project.

Thanks to both of you!!

My method can insert the second project at where the Scrubber is on the timeline.

However any place other that the beginning or end is not a good idea as that would split the project at the point where you inserted.

Thanks Carl - Just after I wrote my last note, I realized that the 2nd clip can be inserted either before or after the 1st one. I'm trying to put together a series of very short clips (20-30 sec each) to show the growth and development of a puppy. - Bill Bill Hansen

That ought to be interesting.

Bill,

Glad you got it working!
And not to beat a dead horse.
But… there is NO “paste” needed using the method shown in the tutorial for combining separate projects in version “8” of PD. That’s why the “paste notation was not included” in that tutorial (as shown in the screen shot below).

But it appears you’ve got it all sorted now, which is the most important thing! Happy Editing!

I understand that Cranston. I was going by that older tutorial at first, not realizing that things have changed. Then when I read Carl's original reply to me, I read it too quickly and didn't absorb the "Paste" move. My error, of course. - Bill Bill Hansen

No problem Bill.
I just (and I apologize if I came of as being bit too defensive), wanted to clarify that no steps “where not included” in that PD8 tutorial (as I was the one that made that version 8 tutorial back then).

But certainly, receiving 3 different tutorials, showing 3 different methods, in 3 different version of PD, covering a similar task, can absolutely lead to one absorbing separate bits and trying to combine and apply these unrelated bits to a seemingly similar task. Only to then find that… something just ain’t working right here.
Kind of like being advised to drop a Chevy engine and a Ford transmission in a Toyota pickup, and then finding that things aren’t coming together as well as one had hoped.

But again, “you” got it resolved and sorted out (perhaps in spite of us, hahaha). And that’s the most important thing!
