What I need to do is simple. Convert my footage to quick time onto my portable hard drive. Every time I try to do so, it says "Create Movie File Error"...how do I correct this?

Very likely you need to copy that file to your Hard Drive. The External Drive may be going to sleep. Then PD loses connection to the source file.
