Import MKV Files in CLPD8?

Is there a reason as to why MKV is not supported in CLPD8?
A lot of the video files that I'm attempting to edit is in MKV format and it is a pain when I have to convert them, thus decreasing the overall video quality, just to import it into CLPD8.

Is there an add-on or something that I could download and install to make the MKV file format usable on CLPD8, without upgrading to a new version of CLPD?

Hi TwillightSun218

As far as I know, no versions of PD support the MKV container file format

In fact, none of my NLE programs can edit these.

The Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free Container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks inside a single file. It is intended to serve as a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar in conception to other containers like AVI, MP4 or ASF, but is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software. Matroska file types are .MKV for video (with subtitles and audio), .MKA for audio-only files and .MKS for subtitles only. High Definition movies in 720 or 1080 pixel width format are often encoded and packaged as a Matroska format video with a .mkv file extension."

My PD9 and PD10 which CL claims support for mkv file imports, does indeed play and edit the mkv video just fine. The video stream needs to be the h.264 inside the mkv container.

Interesting Jeff - I was helping a friend do a project about a year ago using video files from his new Canon HD camera (unsure of the exact model) and even more unsure what file was contained in the MKV format.

He was using FCP and I tried PD8 and S*n* V*g*s Pro and both programs failed to recognise that file type.

Codec issue maybe?
