What version of PD9 are you using? If you are using the latest version (3305) the 'Remove and Leave Gap' should be available.

Also, check your preferences under 'Edit' and see if 'Link all tarcks when inserting/removing content in timeline' is checked. With this checked the 'Remove and Leave Gap' is greyed out.

If you require the 'Link all tracks' you will have to manually move the content to eliminate the gaps.

Some projects require that you change this setting for certain edits.

I am using the latest version, 3305.

And
'Link all tarcks when inserting/removing content in timeline' is checked to prevent vertical displacement when I change or modify a video clip which is located between grouped objects.
And
when removing the checkmark the 'Remove and Leave Gap' is available, and works perfect but my vertical linked objects are displaced - it is therefore plague or cholera. But at least I now know how i works.

To move all the clips to fill the gap before the clip you want to move, shrink the timeline (small clock symbol), rectangle-slect the clips with your mouse on the timeline, de-shrink the timeline (large clock) and then drag the selection to the point you need. This avoids moving individual clips.

Reading this suggestion I feel compelled to add my two-pennyworth. I had to move to PD because the editor I used to use for my SD .avi footage couldn't handle AVCHD but I have to say I find PD incredibly clunky by comparison. For example to do what you have just described I would have just typed Control/E to select all the clips to the right (East) of the cursor or alternatively Control/W to select all to the left (West). This is but one example. There are many others: my old editor did away with the equally clunky trimming dialog. Editing was done directly on the timeline, using the right/left arrow keys for frame accuracy, and pressing ] to trim the out point or [ to trim the in point or I to split at the cursor (these were all available from the menu or a right-click drop-down but the keyboard short-cuts made it a breeze).

In fairness PD is not alone in clunkiness, I evaluated a number of products and none of them came close in useability to my old editor. Regards,

Hi Mike, me too - I had to move to PD because the editor I used couldn't handle AVCHD.

Yes, they all have their pros and cons and, of course, I had several years of familiarity with my old one. Still, even now that I've been using PD for several projects I still find it considerably less useable than my old one.

Incidentally, regarding your original query, with my old editor to remove empty space I simply selected it with a left-click, pressed Delete and everything closed up. Regards,
