Problem when importing SRT

Just started trialling PowerDirector 10. I created a simple .srt file with three subtitles like:

When I import this, the first two imported subtitles include the CR+LF or, IOW, they become two-line subtitles and their position is higher up on the video screen. The third subtitle is a single line, even though it is followed by en empty line too (but not by another line).

Is this behaviour correct ? The empty line is a delimiter and therefore the CR+LF starting it should not belong to a displayed subtitle.

Your SRT file is incorrect.
This is the correct format for SRT files.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubRip

It does not have incrementing numbers for the subtitle.

Attached is the edited and working SRT file.

I changed the lengths of the subtiles and fixed the numbering.
I used the sample image files to test this SRT file.

Yes, that was my mistake, not to number them sequentially, thanks.

However, with your fixed file, as you added two blank lines after each subtitle, the subtitles move even higher up on the video screen. Once I edited each single line from inside PowerDirector to remove the extra lines in each one, they all moved down on the screen.

To me it seems as if PowerDirector includes all lines (including all empty ones) before the next line that contains a sequence number. It should perhaps only keep those empty lines that are non-separating lines, IOW, the last empty line before a new sequence number, should not be included.

Powerdirector will display every line, even blank ones.

I was not too concerned about blank lines, I just wanted to get the srt file to work, It displayed the text and that was my concern.

Did one more experiment and removed all blank lines in the file, which is not according to the 'known' file format, but PowerDirector then imports it correctly, the subtitles sit low on the video screen. This of course may have one restriction for the content, don't start a line with a number as this could confuse PD's import logic to assume it is a new subtitle.

I can live with this as I will only use this for my subtitles I create myself.

Cheers,

You can use Powerdirector to create your subtitles in the subtitle interface. If you create subtitles in the Powerdirector Subtitle room, you will not have to do any extra work.

It is the easiest way to put subtitles in that match the video.

Powerdirector is not the best subtitle editor, but PD does do a good job of matching the video and subtitles. Because you can see where you want to insert.
Plus you don't have to worry about the format of the SRT file. If you want a SRT file Powerdirector can export subtitles in SRT format.

I rarely do new subtitles in original videos, Powerdirector does make it pretty easy to insert subtitles at the correct place in the video.

A Tip:
In the preferences on the Editing Tab, if you set the default subtitle length to 2 seconds, you have a whole lot less adjusting the length of the subtitles.

The default setting out of the box is 10 seconds, which is 5 times as long as you need most subtitles on the screen.
People speaking a normal rate don't take that long to say a sentence.

Sorry to hi-jack this thread but it was the only one I could find on Google regarding subtitles in PowerDirector 10.

I'm still new to it and coming from adobe's (ultra expensive and buggy as heck crash-athon) Creative Suite to corel's slightly more stable but very simple featured Video Studio Pro.

I wanted to know if in PowerDirector subtitles are 'burned' to the video (superimposed) or if they work as you would expect in the sense that you can hide them/disable them while watching the movie on a DVD player/home setup.

I like the fact that it behaves well with SRT files, makes it a more mature product than corel's and the rendering is fast which saves time.

Do you guys find it stable enough for all your editing needs? (Import -> edit -> DVD authoring)?

Thanks for any input.
Hope this post was clear.
