PowerDVD 10 Mark II can't play BluRay, Sony and Samsung players can

Hi,
I prepared and burned a BluRay disc using Sony DVD Architect 5.2 and an LG BD-RE GGW+H20L player/burner drive. I was able play this BluRay on two standalone players: Sony BDP-S550 and Samsung BD-D6700.

However I can't play the BD-R with PowerDVD 10 Mark II 10.0.3715.54. The disc menu appears but there's no audio and the chapter buttons don't work. If I click on Play/Pause, the usual Play/Paused indicators appear in the upper right of the display but that's all that happens. Meanwhile, the drive light for the LG BD-RE+H20L drive is flashing, as it would be if the disc were being read.

Any idea why I can't play the disc with PowerDVD10?

Below are my system's specs, followed by the MediaInfo report for one of the M2TS streams on the BluRay disc.

Thanks for your time,
Alan Mintaka

Hi,

please check the disc structure, there should be an "certificate" folder in the root - if it is not present PDVD will refuse to playback those discs.

Hi Michael,

Yes, there's a "Certificate" folder in the root of the BD-R. There's nothing in it except a Backup folder, which is also empty.

I checked a commercially recorded disc for reference and found a "Certificate" folder in that one that wasn't empty. However, PowerDVD 10 couldn't play that BD either.

With the commercial BD, I got different error-slash-warning messages each time I tried to play the disc. The first time I tried, I got a message saying something about "Mouse Functionality Not Available, did I want to try the PowerDVD 10 Mouse Solution?" I clicked on OK and PowerDVD 10 opened the small remote control popup. Then the BD playback hung on the FBI warning message and couldn't be restarted.

The second time I tried, I got a message saying that "This service will not be available unless there is an active internet connection", but it didn't name which service was missing and whether or not I needed it for BD playback at all.

I connected the PC to the internet, verified the connection with my browser, and restarted PowerDVD 10. I got the same message about the internet connection not being available. My firewall reported that PowerDVD 10 was accessing the internet (and not being blocked in the process). Then then the program hung just after the FBI warning message played.

Each time I made these attempts to play the commercial disc, I had to stop the PowerDVD using the Task Manager. Otherwise, I couldn't exit the program to try again.

Something is hosed, that's for certain. However, whether or not that "Certificate" folder is empty, my standalone players can play the BD-R - so I don't think that's the problem. Something else is going on that keeps PowerDVD from playing even commercial BDs with populated certificate folders. And the error/warning messages about mouse solutions and internet connectivity make no sense.

I think I'm going to just go through the long and arduous process of uninstalling PowerDVD, reinstalling the earliest "full" version (probably 8 Ultra) and re-applying the patches and version 9 and 10 upgrades. I had to do this once before and it's the only way to reinstall without errors.

Aside from reinstallation, can you see anything obvious I could be doing here?

Thanks for your time and patience,

Alan Mintaka

Hi

Mouse Functionality Not Available, did I want to try the PowerDVD 10 Mouse Solution?"

This is no error but limitation of BD-J content on PC

Can you please post the title that has issue on you side?

Hi Michael,
The commercial BD that can't be played is

Arakawa Under the Bridge, Vol. 1 Deluxe Edition
Publisher: NIS America
UPC: 813633011165

Note that this is a DVD/BluRay "combo" package. Obviously we're talking about the BD disc here.

The other disc that won't play is a BD-R I recorded myself, so it doesn't have a title. The specs for one of the M2TS files on that disc were posted in my first message.

Hope this info helps,
Alan Mintaka

I posted the inability of PowerDVD 10 Mark II Ultra 3D (downloaded version) to play certain movies (for example, Salt issued by Sony) but my concerns were ignored. I tried to upgrade my PowerDVD to the latest version - CyberLink.3715 (Ultra_Free_DVD111219-02 and got the following error: "Can't load SKUtil.dll". I tried to reinstall the software and each version now generates this error. In short the software is now useless. Cyberlink has done nothing to address my problems. When I had audacity to suggest that there is an alternative to PowerDVD that actually works, my posts were deleted. I hope you have better luck.

Hi Alan,

thanks, I have forwarded your issue and we will try to reproduce it. It may take some time becasue we need to get the discs first.

Something else is going on that keeps PowerDVD from playing even commercial BDs with populated certificate folders. And the error/warning messages about mouse solutions and internet connectivity make no sense.

Internet Connection is always recommended when use BD, the BD spec allows download of updates for specific titles and some features of BD is not available offline (e.g. BD-Live). The mouse solution pop-up is, as explained, a limitation on PC for BD.

BTW - did you get in contact with our technical support?

Please stay tuned

Michael
