PD 10 produces non standard 3D Blu-ray

After producing a 3D Blu-ray using PD10 I find that the discs are not according to the standard. The stream directory does not contain a SSIF direcory containing the SIFF files. Instead the STREAM directory contains m2ts files with the base and dependent streams multiplexed. This does not conform to the Blu-ray standard.

Another issue is that both the base and dependent streams have about the same bitrate of 8.3 Mb/s. The spec recomends that the bitrate of the dependent stream only needs to be about half that of the base stream. This bitrate is far too low and is not changeable.

Authoring 3D blu-ray was my reason for buying PD 10 but I am very disappointed in what I have found.

It's a mirracle it works at all for the money.

Rush out and buy DoStudio or Scenarist BD - they too have enough problems between them as well - and at a huge cost.

Whilst no where near standard - I've played these simple discs in 6 different 3D systems, and they do at least play, and look surprisingly good.

My hopes of finding a fully loaded 3D authoring system for 70 dollars were sadly dashed too, but I guess Adobe will eventually produce an Encore version with 3D - but watch out, it too may carry a rough price tag - probably to do with licensing.

I do appreciate that this is a cheap package and I was not expecting anything special. I did expect it to confirm to the standards to ensure compatability with all players. I expect that PD 10 discs my not be playable with higher bitrates. The ssif file interleaves the two streams inorder to minimize the head movement and optimize throughput. You could be correct about licencing fees.

I tried playing back the my Blu-ray on a 2D player did not work very well on complex video. I have a shot of people swimming in a pool and the player stuttered with that.

The other odd thing is giving the dependent stream the same bitrate as the base stream. This is a non optimal way of doing things.

I have just checked and found that mvc files produced by PD 10 also have the same bitrate problem.

My 2D Blu ray player (Sony) has had none of these issues so far, and I do understand exactly regarding the base and dependant stream data rates - I have access to Scenarist BD but no menu designer, so I'm stuck with really slow and complex 3D menu work for that - haven't tried DoStudio - the trial is 2D only

I also have huge issues with PD10 being unable to work with MVC files created by other software - bummer

If you check out the price of professional MVC encoders, they start around €6000 and up, so I guess more money =
more efficient.

Maybe my 3D editor will come good and provide 3D authoring soon!

Been investigating this a bit more. As far as I can see the format is based on the AVCHD version 2 spec so these disc will only play in players which can recognise this standard. The specs are not publicly available but I guess the bitrate has been capped to make this compatable with more players. The picture quality would be improved if Cyberlink fixed to dependant bitrate problem. For me the quality is just not good enough and so it looks like I will have to abandon PD 10.

Sony vegas pro will burn Blu-ray 3D discs with the proper format but with no menus. The overal bitrate is also higher at about 25 Mb/s.

My Sony TD10 camcorder came with some software called PMB. This will burn menu less AVCHD blu-rays without re-encoding the video. So this at the moment will gives the highest quality.
