PDR10.exe has stopped working - when adding music

Hi,

I've loaded PDR10 as a trial but it seems to fail when I add any track to the simplest (three slide) presentation.

The Cyberlink Issue Reporter displays PDR10.exe has stopped working. I sent in some detail in the dialogue box but thought I'd ask here as well.

I hope the following is enough information to help solve the apparent problem.

1. Which operating system do you use, W7, Vista, XP?

Windows 7
Quicktime 7.7.1 (1680.42) installed

2. Which version of PD, See Part A below

Power Director Trial 10.0.0.1129b

3. Which SR number (available in the "About" box of PD and is NOT the CD-Key!)

VDE111213-02

4. What kind of video source material used (codec / container), extension? We often ask for a 5 to 10 second sample , please provide one as an attachment.

Unedited jpegs (4 only) from a drift innovation helmet camera.

5. A detailed step by step description of the problem. See Part D below.

I've loaded the trial (set to run as administrator) on a Windows 7 machine (quad core)
I selected 'Slideshow Creator' on the splash screen and selected Try Now.
Next I selected 'Import Image Files' - I selected three 1076x768 jpgs (from a Drift Innovations motorcycle camera, resized using Irfanview).
Select 'Next'
In 'Style and Music' I selected Normal style.
The I added music - a 5.1Mb mp3 (Jona Vark). As soon as this file is selected and I click open, the program seems to close and the Cyberlink Issue Reporter comes up. This happens if I pick an alternate track to open.

If I leave the music out, the slideshow is built and can be seen in Preview.
************
I've also uninstalled PD10 and reinstalled it. Still stops as described above.

6. What anti-virus solution is installed on your PC?

Norton 360 Premiere Edition

7. What codec packs installed? See PD's Readme html file

There is no readme.html file that I can find in the Program Files/Cyberlink/Powerdirector10 directory.

8. What other video editing programs are installed - just in case there is a software conflict.

Roxio Creator 2010 Pro
Adobe Photoshop Elements (with Smartsound QuickTracks for Premiere Elements 9)

9. What burning software is installed on your PC?

Roxio

10. What type of blank disk was used, if you have a burning create issue?

Not applicable

11. What background processes / programs running (especially important for problems with the burning)?

Normal PC stuff - I've closed as much as possible during any testing.

12. Provide the dxdiag log file as an attachment, see Part B below

Wow fixerboy -

That's got to be the most thorough first post I recall reading. All good information.

So - the slideshow creator (along with PD) stopped working when you added the .mp3 file. What's the source of the MP3? Have you tried it with a different type of audio file? wav? wma? It may just be a problem with that particular file.

I just replicated your steps with an mp3 & there were no issues.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks Tony.

I tried three other mp3's - all three-to-four minute ones used on a variety of players so I'm doubting they're the issue.

Here are two of the photos I used and one of the music files.

See what happens.

Regards

Bart -

You were correct to doubt that the audio file was the issue. It wasn't!

Just as a side note for future reference (since you're using the trial version) - there are many dozens of posts throughout the forum which have audio & video files playing correctly in media players but "falling over" in PD. Sometimes, that takes a bit of mucking around to sort out.

Using your Jona Vark.mp3 file & your images, I followed your steps to make a slideshow. No problems (except that the audio levels were pushing way into the red!). PD didn't stop working & the slideshow came out fine.

So - any .mp3 file you've used causes the same issue? Yes?

I noticed from your DxDiag that there were a number of .mp3 decoding filters (connected with Roxio?) on your system. Maybe, & and I'm only guessing, PD cannot access those codecs correctly. That's only a possibility.

It's difficult for me to test, since it works on my PC in my PD10.

Just as an experiment, can you try to make your slideshow with the converted file I've attached? It's just slightly different. Might help to narrow the problem.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks Tony.

I tried your tweaked version of my mp3 - still barfs.

Not sure which way to turn now - I'm really interested in using PD10's beat sync for 800 shots from a motorcycle mounted camera. I'm looking for software with flexible transitions but mainly to the beat of the music. No other software I've seen seems to have this function.

Appreciate your help!

Regards

Hi
Just a small input here, I have had, on occasion, issues with mp3 files, and converting them to WAV files always worked for me.
My issues were corruption of the audio when playing in PD10, which I know is not your problem here, but a conversion, may work.

You may have already tried this as ynotfish said about trying different file types.
Sorry it’s not much.

Thanks Mark, but Tony got the original mp3 to work on his machine so I'm suspecting something a little more sisnister.

Hi Bart -

Mark's suggestion is worth trying. If a .wav or .wma conversion works for you, it points more clearly to a missing codec issue. It wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.

Just so you know, I have the K-Lite codec pack installed on my PC... http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm

Hi Bart,

Just to concur with Tony I too downloaded the images and mp3 file and produced according to your instructions, no issues for me. I too have K-Lite installed.

Ok Guys, we have some progress.

Installing the K-Lite codecs (840-Full.exe) threw up a lot of alleged registry broken/missing files. I ok'd about 50 for these from applications like Roxio and Movie Maker (must've tried this some time ago).

I ran PD10 - still no luck.

I went back and converted the original Jona Vark mp3 to a wav file using Goldwave - silly I know, but at this point I'm not worrying about fidelity.

Strange thing is, that it worked.

I'll have a play with it today and if this kludge will hold for a larger slideshow.

Stay tuned - and thanks for your suggestions.

Bart
