What happened to the (HD) MPEG-2 1080i Profile?

Hi All

You probably know this already - but what happened to the (HD) MPEG-2 1080i profile in the Produce window?

I found this profile very useful in previous versions of PD as the produced file size was relatively small and the quality was excellent.

The BD 1920 x 1080 profile produces a file size bigger than the moon!

Oh well looks like I had better make a custom profile

PD8

PD10

What are the specs on that profile? The BD 1920 1080 profile is 1080i. Looks to me like they just simplified. __________________________________

Hi Neil -

The only real difference I can see between the two is the average/max video bitrates
PD8 - ave. 20000 max 25000
PD10 - ave. 25000 max. 32000

That would account for the file size.

Cheers - Tony

question about this - is there an equivalent to the previous (HDV) MEPG-2 DVD 1080i - other than going to BD? It looks like they dropped back on the resolution of the MEPG-2 format, unless you're willing to go to BD. Or is the (hd) MEPG-2 1080i the equivalent of that (HDV) MPEG-2 1080i which was dropped?

Bill -

The MPEG-2 HDV 1080i profile in PD8 & 9 and the MPEG-2 BD 1440x1080 profile in PD10 are similar. Some of the differences are marked in tha attached MediaInfo reports from produced videos.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks Tony - If I'm interpreting your reply correctly, it looks like PD10 does eliminate the highest "quality" MPEG-2 which was available in PD8 (the MPEG-2 1920X1080 version). That won't make a difference to me in the foreseeable future, but I can see why some people would miss that PD8 version, if the BD version makes much larger file sizes (and I'm guessing that it would require a BD player to play it).

Bill -

It's more a case of streamlining, I think. The BD 1920x1080 profile would be regarded as the highest quality of the default profiles.

The two profiles are similar, bitrate being the point of difference...
(HD) MPEG-2 1080i - 1920x1080 @ 21MBps (only in PD8/9)
BD 1920x1080 – 1920x1080 @ 24MBps

... and it's all a bit hypothetical anyway, since the profiles can be easily customised.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Tony - I'm not at all worried about the BD stats. I would be interested in knowing the stats of the "DVD HQ' which is available in PD10. Just from its position in the list of options in PD 9, it looks like the "DVD HQ" is a lower quality profile than the "(HDV) MEPG-2 1080i" which was sdropped from the list.

However - Even if that is the case, for me, who has no intention of getting into BD at this time, the "MEPG-2 DVD HQ" profile is certainly adequate. If there's any difference at all in the image quality of the resulting videos, I'm pretty sure I'd never see it! I'm very happy with the IQ of the MPEG-2 available in PD10. I was just curious. I still am.

DVD HQ is the standard definition profile used to create DVDs and DVD quality videos. 1080 in all of it's variations is a high definition profile. Based on Tony's work, I will probably create a custom profile as my camera only shoots at 17 Mbps, so I don't need the extra overhead of a 24 Mbps profile. I do like the streamlined options, though. __________________________________
